Good morning, and welcome to the Saints Insider Newsletter for Wednesday, August 30. Tuesday was a newsy day as the Saints cut their roster to 53 players. Here's our wall-to-wall coverage from a wild day on Airline Drive... A Surprising Path to 53The Saints made some surprising moves to reach the league-mandated roster maximum of 53 players Tuesday, including a trade with former head coach Sea Payton. Luke Johnson reports on the wild day of roster transactions at Saints camp. Perhaps the biggest surprise of the day, was the trade of veteran place-kicker Wil Lutz to Denver. The former Pro Bowler took the high road on his social media platform, but his agent took a shot at the Saints organization in a Denver news outlet. Among the cut survivors are nine rookies, including a pair of undrafted free agent specialists that usurped veteran incumbents for roster spots. Few saw either move coming. Luke Johnson takes an in-depth position-by-position look at the roster. Our esteemed Saints editor, Zach Ewing, and I chatted about the roster moves and discussed our biggest takeaways on a special edition of the Saints Insider podcast. We'll have more news and analysis this week as the Saints begin preparation for their regular season opener against the Tennessee Titans on Sept. 10. Meantime, have a great day... Jeff Duncan |
