GOING GLOBAL Hollywood studios struck a deal with European regulators and Sky UK that ends an antitrust investigation into the pay-TV contracts of Disney, Sony, Warner Bros. and NBCUniversal and Sky. The studios agreed to comply with EU regulations that prevent them from “geoblocking” their films on Sky UK. Under the agreement, the studios will let EU customers outside Britain and Ireland subscribe to Sky UK’s pay-TV offerings. With players like Netflix and Amazon spending billions on content, “It’s hard to overstate how profoundly and rapidly the giant global players are reshaping the market around us,” said BBC Director Tony Hall at the Media & Telcoms Conference. Streaming service BritBox, being launched by the BBC and ITV in the UK, will help address the challenge, said Hall: “BritBox will provide an unrivalled collection of British boxsets as well as new original series that you won’t see anywhere else, on demand, all in one place.
