PRODUCTION & DEVELOPMENT Julian Fellowes’ The Gilded Age, ordered by NBC in January 2018, has moved to HBO. “Given the opulent scope and scale of this richly textured character drama, HBO is the perfect home for The Gilded Age,” said Casey Bloys, President, HBO Programming. The epic drama was first put in development in 2012, but Fellowes got sidetracked by Downton Abbey. INSP greenlit Ultimate Cowboy Showdown, a reality competition series aimed at finding the ultimate modern day cowboy. Country music’s Trace Adkins will host the six-night event. Stampede inked a non-exclusive deal with reality producer Phil Gurin (Shark Tank) to develop unscripted and alternative programming for a global audience, reports Deadline. The partnership will be led at Stampede by Jay Judah. Dan Fogelman (This Is Us) renewed his relationship with 20th Century Fox TV with a new five-year deal. NEWFRONTS At Meredith’s NewFront event in downtown Manhattan Thursday, the company announced Katie Couric will host a weekly digital series, #SeeHer Story, that’s part of its slate of shows related to the #SeeHer movement. The series will be distributed across all of People’s outlets. Also in the slate: #SeeHer Style; season two of Badass Women; Parent’s Moms Mean Business; Health’s Wellness Warriors; Rachael Ray Every Day’s Like a Boss; and Shape’s Goal Crushers. Meredith also said it is doubling down on “the three Rs of celebrity,” red carpet, reality and royals, including a slate of 20 shows for Instagram’s IGTV vertical-video platform At its NewFront “Go Binge Yourself” reception in NYC, Tubi announced an exclusive deal for all 100 episodes of Debmar-Mercury and sib Lionsgate Television series Anger Management. The Charlie Sheen comedy, which had a record-setting premiere on FX at the time as the most-watched scripted cable comedy series debut, is available for free to Tubi customers. Tubi’s content library currently contains over 12,000 movies and TV series. Ellen Digital Network is collaborating with Lea Michele (Glee) on Well, Well, Well with Lea Michele, a new series offering health tips and a comedic take on trends. Also in the works: a celebrity-driven series with viral content creator Jay Shetty, and projects featuring mom-preneur Ayesha Curry, viral star Kalen Allen, YouTube star Hannah Hart, and Do Good Daniels with the Daniels family. “My digital studio is so fire, it’s lit… I can’t even,” said Ellen DeGeneres. “But I do know that just over the last two years, our slate of original programming has received over 1 billion organic views (and everyone knows organic is better). And we’re just getting started. I can’t wait for everyone to see what we’ve got this year.” Amid tables of dim sum at NYC’s Jing Fong Restaurant, Vice reported it is reaching 300 million consumers a month. CEO Nancy Dubuc said Vice understands how to connect with young consumers. “We really, deeply understand how they use media and how they understand your brands through media,” Dubuc told media buyers. “Because of how young this world is, we know that Vice’s megaphone as a brand is really just beginning to make an impact.” Changes at Vice include gathering brands like Vice News, Motherboard and Munchies on one site. Listeners can disable voice ads in their ad settings. Should I be worried, Alexa? According to a study by Microsoft, 41% of consumers are concerned about trust and privacy around digital assistants. Nevertheless, 85% are willing to share email addresses with digital assistants in exchange for personalized pricing/rewards, 82% for free or upgraded shipping, and 80% for expedited purchasing options, DIGITAL DATA Facebook execs including Mark Zuckerberg are being sued over alleged data privacy issues related to now-shuttered Cambridge Analytica that resulted in “extreme financial and reputational damage to Facebook,” said a shareholder in a complaint filed in Delaware. “This reputational harm undoubtedly translates into long-term damage to the company.” A company spokesperson said the lawsuit is “without merit.” In more Facebook news, the social media giant announced it has designated right wing extremists like Alex Jones and Milo Yiannopoulos as “dangerous” and will boot them from Facebook and Instagram. Facebook also said it would ban their official accounts, and remove pages or accounts created to represent them. Weeks after acquiring Gizmodo Media Group and The Onion from Univision, G/O Media laid off about 6% of its 400-person staff. Cuts include Susie Banikarim, former editorial director of Gizmodo Media Group. G/O CEO Jim Spanfeller described the layoffs as “not performance-driven but rather process-motivated.” Add iPad, Apple TV and Android TV to the devices and platforms now available for launched-last-year streaming service Locast. As a nonprofit, Locast, available in New York, Chicago, Houston, Dallas, Denver, Boston, Philadelphia, Baltimore and D.C., does not need a TV station’s permission to stream.
