IN THE NEWS NBC is keeping Saturday Night Live’s longest-running cast member, Kenan Thompson, busy. The net ordered The Kenan Show, a family comedy produced by Universal Television in association with Broadway Video, to series. Thompson, who is expected to stick with SNL for season 45 next fall, is also set to serve as a judge in NBC reality competition Bring the Funny with Chrissy Tiegen and Jeff Foxworthy. NBC also renewed America’s Got Talent: The Champions for season two, and World of Dance for season four. ABC renewed Shondaland dramas Grey’s Anatomy for seasons 16 and 17, How Get Away With Murder for a sixth run, and Station 19 for a third. EP and showrunner Krista Vernoff will helm Grey’s and Station19, “giving fans two hours of feels on Thursdays and providing a seamless crossover narrative on both series,” said the network. The net is also hanging on to The Goldbergs for season seven and its spinoff, Schooled, for a sophomore season. It’s not you, it’s me: Fresh Off the Boat star Constance Wu clarified her unhappy comments about the renewal of her show, announced on Friday. After first tweeting, “So upset now that I’m literally crying. Ugh.,” Wu explained her disappointment stemmed from having to withdraw from another project, not dissatisfaction with her ABC role. “My dismayed social media replies were more about that other project and not about FOTB,” said the actress. Viacom reported its 2Q19 earnings results. Earnings of 93 cents per share beat forecasts, but a 7% dip in domestic advertising (not helped by Easter’s late date) led to missed revenue targets. Highlights included sequential improvement in YOY domestic ad sales growth, with Advanced Marketing Solutions revenue up 76% YOY; expanded services; and new mobile partnerships. “As the media landscape continues to segment across price points, we’re confident in our strategy, strong results and the opportunities ahead as we continue to position Viacom for the future,” said CEO Bob Bakish. Jeff Glor sat in the CBS Evening News anchor chair for the last time on Friday, and used his farewell appearance as an opportunity to spotlight all the staffers behind the scenes at the broadcast. “I am awed every day by their dedication to writing the first draft of history, and telling America’s story,” said Glor. “I am awed by their grace. I thank them – and you. I’ll see you soon.” A rotation of anchors will fill the seat until Norah O’Donnell debuts in the summer, starting with John Dickerson. In the CBS News overhaul, Dickerson and O’Donnell are being replaced on CBS This Morning by Anthony Mason and Tony Dokoupil; Dickerson is moving to 60 Minutes. TiVO is splitting into two independent companies. The move allows the product business, which generated $401 million in revenue in 2018, to pursue a “customer-first strategy” without being tied to an IP licensing business. Victoria’s Secret head Les Wexner told staff, in a memo obtained by CNBC, that “Going forward, we don’t believe network television is the right fit” for the lingerie company’s fashion shows. The annual event, which aired for 15 years on CBS before moving to ABC last year, has seen ratings declines, to an all-time low of 3.3 million viewers and a 0.9 rating among A18-49 its last outing. “We’re focusing on developing exciting and dynamic content and a new kind of event – delivered to our customers on platforms that she’s glued to,” wrote Wexner. |

That’s up from 8% three years ago. Home devices will have the largest gains in household adoption next year, forecasts CTA. “Americans are embracing AI tech in the home at unprecedented levels," states Steve Koenig, VP of research, CTA. "The dramatic rise in household ownership of intelligent devices like smart speakers shows American consumers endorse the benefits and convenience of artificial intelligence and voice recognition to help them with everyday tasks." The allegedly unhackable USB flash drive eyeDisk, which uses iris recognition to unlock the device, was hacked by UK-based cybersecurity firm Pen Test Partners. A researcher was able to find the device’s backup password – and said the real password could be picked up even if the wrong password was entered. EyeDisk promised a fix. Eurofins Digital Testing announced it will serve as the official test partner for the CI Plus 2.0 standard, an enhanced security system enabling manufacturers, operators and broadcasters to deliver secure content on digital TV receivers via the Common Interface and Conditional Access Module. The CI Plus 2.0 specification adds a USB-form factor, allowing consumers to receive pay-TV services by leveraging USB-based CAMs. Tinder is planning to launch a new version of its dating app for emerging markets. In a letter to the commission, Sens. Ed Markey (D-Massachusetts), Richard Blumenthal (D-Connecticut), Richard Durbin (D-Illinois) and Josh Hawley (R-Missouri) said voice recognition technology and AI tools like Amazon’s Echo Dot Kids Edition present “significant privacy concern” that merit investigation.
