IN THE NEWS Designated Survivor may not be over after all, despite its cancellation by ABC. eOne is reportedly in talks to shop the Kiefer Sutherland political thriller to other networks. After three seasons, it’s the end of the line for SundanceTV’s Hap and Leonard. The AMC owned network announced the show’s cancellation on Tuesday. Jon Collier (Bones) will serve as EP and showrunner on the newly-picked-up CW drama In the Dark. Fox TV Group chairmen and CEO’s Dana Walden and Gary Newmanare in the midst of negotiations for one-year extensions to their contracts. The plan is for both to oversee the company through the pending sale of key 21st Century Fox assets to Disney. Chicago Fire is losing an original cast member - Monica Raymund is exiting the firefighter drama after six seasons. “It has been an honor to play Dawson on Chicago Fire and one of the most meaningful experiences of my life,” Raymund shared on Twitter. “I am so thankful for the journey and especially to al of you for watching, but I have made the decision that it’s time for me to move on to the next chapter of my life.” Networks are gearing up for Saturday’s royal wedding. International television festival SeriesFest, taking place June 22 to 27, announced that Lady Antebellum will make their Red Rocks Amphitheatre debut as the centerpiece performance on Monday, June 25. Kicking off the evening will be a screening of Paramount Network’s new original scripted series Yellowstone, starring Kevin Costner. AT THE UPFRONTS Univision offered a different kind of Upfront this year, a two-day experiential event, “Culture Unbound,” held at Tribeca’s Spring Studios. “Forget the theater district. We’re upfronting in the hip and fun district, which is like the experience we’re giving you today,” said CRO Tonia O’Connor. “It’s time for some disruption.” The crowds (there were three separate events) visited interactive experience spanning entertainment, news and sports. And there was dancing, and food inspired by a new digital-first brand initiative based on the launch of culinary vertical Delicioso. With Hispanic consumer spending projected to grow 85% over the next ten years, Univision touted the opportunity for advertisers to immerse their brands in the culture, while driving growth. In addition to its ability to reach Hispanics via broadcast, cable and sports nets, Univision announced 20 digital initiatives with brands including, Ace Media, FacebookWatch, Oath, Popsugar, Snapchat, TED and The Player’s Tribune. Univision also announced it has joined Open A.P., started by Viacom, Turner and Fox Networks Group, giving advertisers a standard group of data sets, and formed Aperture by Univision Communications, a new unit to uncover insights on Hispanic consumers. Because, as O’Connor told the Upfront audience, “Culture has always been at the root of UCI’s mission.” Telemundo threw a party at the Park Avenue Armory after parent company NBCUniversal’s umbrella event, featuring a concert with J. Balvin. “Hispanics are a growing cultural, political and economic powerhouse influencing every aspect of our country,” said Cesar Conde, Chairman NBCUniversal International Group and NBCUniversal Telemundo Enterprises, as the net headed into the season. “This is a young, social and mobile segment that is increasingly setting trends, influencing pop culture and becoming the new mainstream, representing the single-largest growth opportunity for corporate America.” Channing Dungey, President, ABC Entertainment, unveiled the network’s new programming lineup at the ABC Upfronts at Lincoln Center’s David Geffen Hall in NYC on Tuesday. “We enter the new season bolstered by success and the stability that it affords us,” said Dungey. “The new shows we unveil today strengthen an already vibrant schedule of some of the best television has to offer.” Dancing with the Stars: Juniors, a fresh take on established favorite Dancing With the Stars, pairs celebrity kids with professional junior ballroom dancers to perform choreographed routines. Show is produced by BBC Studios. The network adds its first regular primetime broadcast talk show in nine years with The Alec Baldwin Show; the one-hour talker, which debuted as a sneak preview in March, showcases Baldwin’s in-depth conversations with compelling personalities. A total of eight new series were announced, including one-hour dramas A Million Little Things, The Fix, Grand Hotel, The Rookie and Whiskey Cavalier, as well as half-hour comedies The Kids Are Alright, Schooled and Single Parents. New Freeform series include Besties, which was ordered from co-creators Kenya Barris and Ranada Shepard. The half-hour comedy comes on the success of Barris’ breakout coming-of-age show grown-ish, which was the #1 cable comedy season-to-date W18-34. Meanwhile, the net expands the universe of Pretty Little Liars with Pretty Little Liars: The Perfectionists, which features returning favorites Sasha Pieters as Alison and Janel Parrish as Mona.
