PRODUCTION & DEVELOPMENT As it prepares to expand to seven nights of original programming this fall, Bravo ordered eight new projects for development. Shows include (working titles all): docu-series Raising the Bar: Hong King, Beverly Hills Driving School, Pampered Campers, and Real Housewives of the 1960s; docu-comedy Gold with Envy; prank show Your Shitty Family; social experiment Will You Marry Us?; and doccu-series Flying High. The New York Times, Paramount Television, Anonymous Content and 3dot Productions are teaming for a scripted anthology series. Overlooked tells the stories of women who left an indelible mark on history, but did not receive an obit in the Times – something the paper has turned into a regular feature. Count SundanceTV and Sundance NOw in on international limited drama series The Name of the Rose, based on the novel by Umberto Eco, which will air in Italy on Rai in 2019. John Turturro (The Night Of), Michael Emerson (Lost) and Rupert Everett (Miss Peregrine’s Home for Peculiar Children) star. Atrium TV launched four drama projects: Silo, produced by Michael Douglas and set in a future San Francisco (ha!); six-part mini-series Dry Run: The Lincoln In Spain; eight-part Dr. Zhivago; and historical series The Last Amazon. Animal Planet ordered season ten of Pit Bulls & Parolees, from 44 Blue Productions and Rive Gauche Productions. Last season the show was up +9% among A25-54 versus the previous go-round. Tomorrow Studios (Snowpiercer) will adapt New York Times best-selling biography Jackie, Janet & Lee, with author J. Randy Taraborrelli along with Keri Selig (After Camelot). Taraborrelli and Selig will produce with Tomorrow Studios’ Adelstein and Becky Clements. The book centers on sisters Jacqueline Kennedy Onassis and Lee Radziwill and their ferociously ambitious mother, Janet Auchincloss. Dynamic Television and writer, producer, and series creator Adi Hasak (Shades of Blue), under his Adi TV Studios banner, are teaming to launch a straight-to-series U.S. TV drama based on the German series Tempel from ZDF. Tempel tells the story of an ex con-turned-cage fighter. ADVERTISING MediaMath is the first omnichannel DSP to join DPAA, the global organization for digital out-of-home. “DOOH is an exciting space for CMOs who can create smarter media plans and open up opportunities to leverage data to activate exciting applications including, for example, dynamic creative,” said Lewis Rothkopf, GM, Supply, MediaMath. TVision’s Q1 2018 Eyes on Screen TV Attention report tracked how ads broke through compared to other ads in the same pod. Car brands captured three of the top five spots overall for brand attention, with Olympics advertiser Toyota taking the top spot: Toyota Camry 116.9 Choice Hotels 110.3 Ace Hardware 110.2 Volvo 108.7 Cadillac 108.3 DIGITAL DATA Europe’s General Data Protection Regulation goes into effect May 25 (hence all those “we’ve updated our privacy policy” emails), giving consumers more control over their privacy. What does it mean for data companies? “We believe there will be a stricter vetting of data partners, which will lead to higher scrutiny of privacy practices before and after the regulation was announced,” said Ashwin Navin, CEO and co-founder of Samba TV. “This means that data partners who were proactive will likely be favored over those that were reactive. This is especially relevant to TV data, where quality and privacy controls are the biggest factors in selecting a partner." Some advocacy groups are so alarmed by the power of Facebook that they have formed a coalition and are calling on the Federal Trade Commission to break up the social media giant. “The FTC has the authority to re-establish choice, competition and innovation, and free us from Facebook’s sprawling monopoly,” said Sarah Miller, director of Citizens Against Monopoly. Facebook said it is not a monopoly, but rather “is in a competitive environment where people use our apps at the same time they use free services offered by many others. The average person uses eight different apps to communicate and stay connected.” Sundance Now is celebrating Pride Month with the premiere of five original LGBTQ-themed documentaries. Take 5: Beyond the Parades, curated as part of the streaming service’s Take 5 franchise, debuts June 7. Netflix ordered two more stand-up comedy specials from Indian comedian Vir Das. Das’ Abroad Understanding debuted in 2017. COMING UP Freeform is celebrating tonight’s series finale of Malcolm in the Middle with a mini-marathon of the casts’ favorite episodes from 1p-6p. One-hour finale airs at 8:30p on sister net ABC. Kidscreen Summit 2019 has been scheduled for February 11-14 at the InterContinental Miami in downtown Miami. Registration for the event opens in early July. Ten years after the mysterious death of three-year-old Caylee Anthony, her grandparents, George and Cindy Anthony, talk to Elizabeth Vargas in A&E special, Casey Anthony’s Parents Speak. Two-hour special airs Monday, May 28 at 8p. Jennifer Hudson, Ryan Adams, Kane Brown and Julia Michaels have been added as special performers on the season finale of NBC’s The Voice, airing tonight at 9p. GOING GLOBAL Comcast and Sky were notified that so far, Comcast’s $31 billion proposed acquisition of Sky does not raise public interest concerns that would require governmental intervention. That’s a change from Fox’s attempted takeover of Sky, which raised regulatory red flags. Production company Little a, backed by Roughcut TV, launched in the UK with Jon Petrie as managing director. Little a, which specializes in comedies based on original ideas and personal stories, secured its first commission with Channel 4, a co-production with Roughcut TV, Stath Lets Flats. CASTING Laurence Fox (Lewis) and Kate Fleetwood (Harlots) have joined the season three cast of ITV drama Victoria….Kim Raver returned for a season 14 arc in ABC’s Grey’s Anatomy, and she’ll stick around as a season regular for season 15. Raver was first on the show in seasons 6-8….Ginger Gonzaga (I’m Dying Up Here) will recur opposite Jim Carrey in Showtime’s upcoming Kidding. |
