PRODUCTION & DEVELOPMENT The L-Word: Generation Q is the name of Showtime’s L Word sequel, slated to debut this fall. The eight-ep series begins production in LA this summer, with Marja-Lewis Ryan (The Four-Faced Liar, 6 Balloons) serving as showrunner and exec producer, with original series creator Ilene Chaiken and original series stars Jennifer Beals, Katherine Moennig and Leisha Hailey all returning. Kristen Campo also serves as exec producer. The pilot is directed by Steph Green, who also serves as exec producer on the episode. Shudder, AMC Networks’ premium streaming service for horror, thriller, and the supernatural, renewed original series The Last Drive-In with Joe Bob Briggs for a second season. In each ep, Briggs presents an eclectic horror movie double feature, interrupting the films to expound upon their merits, histories and significance to genre cinema. NBCUniversal International Formats licensed Quebecor Content series Brooklyn Nine-Nine, to be produced by ComediHa! in Quebec City. The move marks the first international version of the Golden Globe and Emmy-winning comedy, which currently airs on NBC in the States. Anonymous Content, Chapter One, Hopscotch Features and Joel Edgerton (Boy Erased) scored rights to produce a TV drama adaptation of Australian best-selling book Boy Swallows Universe. Project is the first from Anonymous Content’s new UK spin-off Chapter One. Coming-of-age story is set in the ‘80s in Brisbane’s violent working-class suburbs and follows a boy trying to find his way. Open Door Co., Nomad Films and TVO announced the TVO original documentary series Political Blind Date will return for season 2, with12 new episodes. NEW & RETURNING SERIES Six-ep Science Channel series Truth Behind the Moon Landing, premiering Sunday, June 2 at 10p, will dissect popular conspiracy claims surrounding the iconic moon landing nearly 50 years ago with the help of former NASA astronaut Leland Melvin, former FBI agent Chad Jenkins and author Mike Bara. TNT launched the official season 3 trailer for Claws, which returns to the network Sunday, June 9 at 9p. OWN unleashed a trailer and key art for the season 4 return of drama series Queen Sugar, on Wednesday, June 12 at 9p. New season follows the Bordelon family as they discover Nova is publishing her memoir that divulges long-held family secrets. Chuck Zukowski, a former Colorado law enforcement officer, has been investigating UFO-related incidents for 30 years. Now, together with his son Daniel Zukowski and investigator Heather Taddy he’s pursuing cases authorities ignore in new Travel Channel series Alien Highway, premiering Wednesday, June 12 at 10p. WeTV dropped a sneak peak for season 3 of Growing Up Hip Hop: Atlanta, which drops Thursday, June 13 at 9p. Among the drama this season R. Kelly’s ex-wife Andrea “Drea” Kelly and her three children move back to Atlanta and are breaking their silence regarding their child support battle. Good Trouble returns to Freeform for season 2 on Tuesday, June 18 at 8p. In the first ep, the outcome of the Jamal Thompson case is decided, and Callie is forced to decide what she’s willing to fight for; in ep 2 Mariana’s new relationship complicates her work environment. VH1 is bringing back 16 eps of Basketball Wives on a new night this summer. Series premieres Wednesday, June 19 at 8p and features new drama as the ladies are tested like never before while balancing life’s unexpected turns, career endeavors and strained relationships. Netflix will bring back gritty docuseries Girls Incarcerated for a second season on June 21… Then, Orange Is the New Black will premiere its seventh and final season on Friday, July 26 on Netflix, which dropped new photos of what’s ahead. CBS will debut the US version of international reality series Love Island on Tuesday, July 9 at 8p. New episodes of the show—which brings a group of single “Islanders” together in a villa in Fiji for a summer of friendships, relationships and, let’s face it, drama—will air every weeknight through Wednesday, August 7. Series is produced by ITV Entertainment. COMING UP A&E Network celebrates the lives of Farrah Fawcett and John F. Kennedy Jr. through two in-depth original documentaries airing under the “Biography” banner surrounding the anniversaries of their deaths. Biography: Farrah Fawcett Forever and Biography: JFK Jr. –The Final Year will air Tuesday, July 9 at 9p and Tuesday, July 16 at 9p, respectively. Lifetime set July 27 for the premiere of its latest Book to Screen movie special, V.C Andrews' Casteel Family Movie Series Event. The Andrews’ event will air consecutively every Saturday at 8p through August 24, and follows the life of Heaven Casteel and her siblings after their father devises a scheme that threatens to destroy their dreams and separate the family forever. DIGITAL DATA Poker Central and CBS are teaming to live-stream the gold bracelet events at the 50th annual World Series of Poker across platforms including PokerGO, Poker Central’s direct-to-consumer OTT service, and CBS All Access, from May 30-July 16, with additional coverage to air on CBS Sports Network and CBS Sports Digital platforms. TECH TALK Snapchat on Tuesday quickly scrubbed a handful of X-rated AR lenses that adult entertainment company Naughty America distributed on the service to promote its business. However, the studio at press time still was distributing the source files that allow Snapchat users to build their X-rated lenses of their own. Naughty America CEO Andreas Hronopoulos told Variety he understood the lenses to be in compliance with Snapchat’s policies, arguing he wasn’t making them publicly available. Snapchat disagreed, and took down Naughty America’s account and its lenses. YouTube is poised this summer to change the way it displays channel subscriber counts, shifting to a model where it provides only rounded figures instead of actual follower numbers. KIDS NEWS Nickelodeon revealed a first look of the upcoming SpongeBob’s Big Birthday Blowout, featuring for the first time the voice cast behind SpongeBob, Patrick, Mr. Krabs, Sandy, Squidward and Plankton playing human versions of their animated characters, plus guest star David Hasselhoff (Baywatch). The mixed live-action and animated special premieres Friday, July 12, at 7p. Believe Entertainment Group and former Nickelodeon EVP Keith Dawkins, CEO of newly formed Rock Hill Media Ventures, are partnering to create kids and family programming. The companies will jointly develop and bring to market initiatives with the goal of building global franchises built around kids-based IP. Corus Entertainment acquired the Canadian broadcast rights for Guru Studio’s preschool series Pikwik. The animated series, which began production last August, will launch in Canada on Treehouse in early 2020 to coincide with the US premiere on Disney Junior. Toonz Media Group and Turkey-based Fauna Entertainment are co-producing Briko, a CGI animation and live action edutainment adventure series. Aimed at K4-7, series follows a curious and creative young boy and his best friend, a hyperactive rabbit named Hepi as they navigate the contents of a surprise box in each ep. CASTING Netflix rounded out the cast for Latinx series Gentefied.
