PRODUCTION & DEVELOPMENT OWN renewed romantic drama Love Is___ for a second season. The series premiered June 18 with 1.2 million viewers and a 1.2 W25-54 rating (Live+3), and it was the night’s #2 telecast on all television among African American women. HBO landed The Time Traveler’s Wife from UK writer/producer Steven Moffat (Dr. Who, Sherlock) and gave it a straight-to-series order. The project had reportedly been pursued by multiple outlets, including Amazon. Sonar Entertainment teamed with comedian/actor Felipe Esparza to develop Crossing Over – Bad Decisions Along the Border With Felipe Esparza. Project offers an up close and personal look at America’s southern border. Hulu issued a pilot order to an adaptation of Less Than Zero, based on Bret Easton Ellis’ novel of the same name. Austin Abrams (The Walking Dead, Paper Town) is cast as the lead in the project, which follows a college freshman who returns home for Christmas to spend time with his ex-girlfriend and his friend who struggles with addiction. Poldark producer Mammoth Screen is adapting Alexander Dumas’ The Count of Monte Cristo and working with Poldark writer Debbie Horsfield on the remake. Story follows the Bourbon Restoration through the reign of Louis-Philippe of France ahead of the Hundred Days period, when Napoleon returned to power. Motor Trend Group greenlit two original series, Uncaged (wt) and 2018 Best Driver’s Car, exclusively for the Motor Trend App. Both are scheduled to premiere this fall. “We’re creating best-in-class content featuring top experts that will rev the engine of motor minded fans everywhere,” said Robert S. RESEARCH Nielsen released a reimagined Nielsen Total Audience Report representative of the first quarter of 2018, offering a comprehensive view into the behaviors and stories developing across the media landscape. Among key highlights: On average, U.S. adults spend over 11 hours a day connected to linear and digital media and almost six hours a day with video alone. Two-thirds of U.S. TV households have devices capable of streaming content to the TV set, and one out of 10 minutes of television use in streaming capable homes is streaming to the TV set. Young adults 18-34 spend the largest percentage of time with TV-connected devices and digital devices compared to other demographics. As of Q1 2018, nearly three percent of TV homes subscribe to a virtual multichannel video programming distributor. TV Time launched its TVLytics platform, a new television measurement solution that leverages billions of first-party data points from the TV Time consumer app to provide insight on viewing patterns and trends for today’s cross-platform TV landscape. The platform will show viewing patterns across all global OTT, broadcast and cable network and all devices. DIGITAL DATA ComScore is launching a new “Campaign Ratings” platform in beta this September. All major TV networks and OTT players have signed up to test it, including ABC, CBS, CNN, Disney, FOX, Freeform, GroupM, NBCUniversal, The CW Network, Turner and Viacom. Powered by Hulu, the new platform will “provide media buyers and sellers with trusted, unduplicated measurement of ad campaigns across linear TV, OTT, desktop and mobile platforms,” the companies said in a statement. Retail revenue from consumer technology spending is set to reach $377 billion in 2018, a 6% increase over 2017, according to the Consumer Technology Association mid-year update. Facebook said it has identified eight Facebook pages, 17 Facebook profiles and seven Instagram accounts involved in a coordinated campaign aimed at influencing the midterm elections. The accounts ran 150 ads between April 2017 and June 2018, paid for in American and Canadian dollars. “These bad actors have been more careful to cover their tracks, in part due to the actions we’ve taken to prevent abuse over the past year,” said Nathaniel Gleicher, Facebook’s head of cybersecurity policy. Schitt’s Creek is available on the new POP NOW app, which can be downloaded to Apple, Roku or Android devices. On Tuesday, VRV became the official home of Killjoys in the U.S. with the launch of all three seasons to the platform. It’s the first time VRV has licensed a current TV series directly from traditional TV. “The VRV community continues to signal their desire for sci-fi content, so we have partnered with NBCU and SyFy to bring Killjoys to VRV this August. RATINGS Hallmark Channel’s annual “Summer Nights” programming stunt kicked off on Saturday night with the premiere of Love on Safari, which marked the most-watched and highest rated cable program of the day and week among Households, excluding news and sports. The project averaged a 2.5 Household rating, 2.6 million Total Viewers an 376,000 W25-54. Univision Network aired three hours of premieres Sunday night, driving the network into first place among Spanish-language broadcasters. Some 4.8 million Total Viewers 2+ tuned in to all or park of the three-hour block. FOX Business Network marked its 14th consecutive month as the leader in business news, according to Nielsen Media Research. In a week where almost every daytime program in first-run syndication was down due in part to preemptions for coverage of the Helsinki summit and its aftermath, the top three court shows surged to recent highs in the session ending July 22. Despite being in reruns, Judge Judy (four-week high 6.3 Live+SD national rating, up 2% from the week before tied access game show champ Family Feud as syndication’s number one program overall. Hot Bench (five-week high 2.1, up 11%) was mostly in repeats, but ranked as the third highest show in daytime. People’s Court (1.4, up 8%) rose to a four-week high.
