IN THE NEWS Charter Communications is launching a 24-hour Spectrum News channel in November for its 1.5 million customers in Southern California. Cater Lee, VP of News and Content at Spectrum, is heading the project, which will lean towards community news rather than crime and car chases. HBO gave an early second season renewal to Random Acts of Flyness. The late nighter from Terence Nance, featuring interconnected vignettes, launched August 3. Viceland is also in renewal mode, ordering a third season of Most Expensivest and a sophomore run of Slutever. And the net is bringing back Bong Appetit with a fresh cannabis cooking format and new co-host, Cypress Hill frontman B Real. Noticias Telemundo is boosting its D.C. bench with the addition of Mexican journalist Javier Vega as correspondent. The E.W. Scripps Company struck a deal to acquire two ABC-affiliated television stations in Florida and Texas owned by Raycom Media for $55 million. KXXV/KRHD in Waco, Texas, and WTXL in Tallahassee, Florida, are being divested as part of Gray Television’s acquisition of Raycom. With the deal, Scripps will own 17 ABC affiliates and 35 TV stations in 26 markets. TEGNA is also taking advantage of the Gray/Raycom merger, with a definitive agreement with Gray to acquire WTOL, the CBS affiliate in Toledo, OH, and KWES, the NBC affiliate in Odessa-Midland, TX, for $105 million in cash. The deal is contingent on the close of the merger, expected to take place in the 4Q18, as well as the customary regulatory approvals and closing conditions. Former Miss Americas are calling for the resignations of the organization’s chairman, former Fox News anchor Gretchen Carlson, and CEO Regina Hopper, after the current title holder claimed she had been bullied and silenced. On Monday, Heather Whitestone (Miss America 1995) and Suzette Charles (1984), told Today’s Megyn Kelly that Carlson and Hopper should step down, a day after Carlson disputed the accusations on social media, saying “actions have consequences.” |

PRODUCTION & DEVELOPMENT The BBC shared the names of the writers and directors onboard the upcoming season of Doctor Who with showrunner Chris Chibnall. Directors include Mark Tonderai (Gotham), Jennifer Perrott (Gentleman Jack), Doctor Who alum Jamie Childs and Sallie Aprahamian (Teachers). Writers are Pete McTighe (Wentworth), Joy Wilkinson (Nick Nickleby), Ed Hime (Skins), Vinay Patel (Murdered By My Father) and Malorie Blackman (Pig-Hearted Boy). Apparently they’re not strangers. “We have a team of writers who’ve been working quietly and secretly for a long time now, crafting characters, worlds and stories to excite and move you,” said Chibnall. “A set of directors who stood those scripts up on their feet, bringing those ideas, visuals and emotions into existence with bravura and fun.” Kyle Long inked an overall deal with Universal Cable Productions to develop and produce premium scripted content. The studio is behind Long’s USA series, Unsolved. Netflix’s first Mexican reality show will focus on nine of Mexico City’s splashiest socialites. Made in Mexico debuts Friday, September 28, with a cast that includes a nightclub impresario, TV host, model and American expat, among others. Pasiones, which features telenovelas and drama series in Spanish, launched Korean sci-fi romantic comedy No Soy un Robot (I'm Not a Robot) on its Latin American feed starting yesterday. Series airs Monday-Friday. Discovery Digital has launched Don’t Blink, a photographic and scientific examination of the extraordinary parts of our daily world that can’t be seen by the naked eye. Series is currently available to stream on Discovery Channel GO and SCI GO. DIGITAL Household broadband usage growth continues to grow at an annual rate of more than 30%, according to year-over-year comparisons of Q2 2018 data by OpenVault, provider of industry analytics and technology solutions for broadband operators. Average usage per household as of June 30, 2018 was 226.4GB, up slightly from Q1 2018. When compared with results from June 30, 2017, OpenVault data showed year over year average usage growth of 31.3%, from 172.4GB/HH to 226.4GB/HH. The analysis identified usage-based billing as a factor in curbing usage growth and strain on networks - by comparing operators offering usage-based billing with those that offer flat-rate pricing, OpenVault found 12.2% higher average usage per HH for Non-UBB operators in June 2018. Facebook filed court papers saying users suing it over data given to Cambridge Analytica don’t have a case because they consented to share that data; their gripe should be with the app developer who obtained the data and sold in violation of Facebook’s policies. “Plaintiffs’ counsel has admitted that this is not a data breach case, in which users’ data was obtained against their will,” said Facebook. “And if Plaintiffs disagree that people should be permitted to consent to sharing their data with apps, their remedy is not in the courts where they have no viable claim.” Facing backlash from subscribers over video promos shown between streaming episodes, Netflix issued a statement explaining it was just testing recommendations to help members discover content they’d enjoy. “It is important to note that a member is able to skip a video preview anytime if they are not interested,” added the company. ADVERTISING Comcast scored 12% of all ad revenue from U.S. advertisers during the first half of 2018, according to Standard Media Index, beating out second place Google, which grabbed 10%. SMI reports 63% of ad revenue from national marketers went to traditional media, and 37% to digital. The percentage of linear TV advertising coming from programmatic deals will grow to 10.7% in two years, up from .3% in 2015, according to a SpotX survey commissioned by Kagan. Total U.S. digital advertising is forecast to grow to $17.1 billion by 2021, from $11.9 billion in 2017.
