IN THE NEWS Weigel Broadcasting and CBS Television Stations have launched Start TV, featuring female-forward procedurals like The Closer, The Good Wife and The Medium. The multicast net reaches 42% of the U.S. at launch, aiming for 60% by 1Q19. Shows air seven days a week. Contrary to a claims by Ronan Farrow, his investigation into reports of sexual assault by Harvey Weinstein “was never cleared or approved for air by NBC News Legal or Standards,” said NBC yesterday. “As is common practice, NBC lawyers met with him on several occasions to offer legal advice in connection with his reporting. But at no time did they render a judgment on the draft scripts readiness to air. While he was told by his editors that several elements of the draft script were technically ‘reportable,’ he was consistently advised that – even taken together – they were not yet sufficient to air a story alleging serial sexual abuse by Harvey Weinstein without at least one victim or witness on the record.” On Monday, Farrow tweeted his Weinstein story had been cleared by legal and standards, but was blocked by executives. Brand new WPP CEO Mark Read said the company has “made progress in a number of important areas” recently, including organic net revenue growth in 2Q18 of .7%. After tax profits for the first half were up 11.3%, to $905 million. Its worst performance by region for the second quarter was North America, with a net revenue decline of 3.1%. Having already divested itself of 15 companies or stakes in companies, Read said, “We have accelerated initiatives that will simplify our organization, making it easier for us to manage and clients to access.” Read was named CEO on Monday, succeeding Martin Sorrell, who exited in April; Andrew Scott, former head of WPP Europe and promoted to co-COO with Read after Sorrell’s exit, will keep that title. The Society of Cable Telecommunications Engineers and its global arm, the International Society of Broadband Experts, reached an agreement with Advanced Media Technologies that will expand the availability of SCTE•ISBE learning and development resources for the cable telecom workforce. Under the agreement, AMT will represent SCTE•ISBE before non-CAP member Tier 2 and Tier 3 cable operators, as well as telecommunications and Internet Service Providers, within the United States. “With their extensive background in cable and telecommunications, Advanced Media Technologies is well positioned to communicate the value of SCTE•ISBE training to existing and new customers,” said Matt Aden, VP, sales and operations for SCTE•ISBE. Season 14 The Bachelorette alum Colton Underwood (he’s the former NFL player who loves dogs) has been named the next star of ABC’s The Bachelor. Season 23 launches in January. Cosby Show alum Geoffrey Owens appeared on ABC’s Good Morning America Tuesday, after a job shaming photo of him working at a Trader Joe’s was posted online and thousands jumped to his defense on social media. “There is no job that’s better than another job,” Owens told Robin Roberts. “It might pay better, it might have better benefits, it might look better on a resume and on paper. But actually, it’s not better. Every job is worthwhile and valuable.” SAG-AFTRA promoted #ActorsWithDayJobs, and Tyler Perry came through with a job offer on The Haves and the Have Nots. “#GeoffreyOwens I’m about to start shootings OWN’s number one drama next week!” posted Perry. “Come join us!!! I have so much respect for people who hustle between gigs. The measure of a true artist.” Craig Melvin has been upped to co-anchor of NBC’s Today. Melvin, who anchors MSNBC Live at 1p and until August 25 co-hosted Today’s Saturday edition, tweeted, “Dreams do come true.” |
