IN THE NEWS E.W. Scripps Company’s Katz Networks is relaunching Court TV in May, having acquired brand assets including the 100,000-hour Court TV library from Turner Broadcasting. The 24/7 channel has secured over-the-air distribution agreements with local TV station groups that will allow it to reach over 50% of U.S. television households. “Today, while consumer interest in the real-life drama of true-crime programming is at an all-time high, there is no dedicated daily court coverage on television,” noted Jonathan Katz, president and CEO of Katz Networks. “We expect the new Court TV to fill that void on cable, satellite, over-the-air and over-the-top.” Court TV ended its original run in 2007 and was folded into truTV. The Broadcast Television Journalists Association announced the nominees for the 24th Annual Critics’ Choice Awards. HBO and Netflix led the pack with 20 nominations each, followed by FX with 17, Amazon with 12 and NBC with 11. Topping the list of nominated series were The Americans (FX), The Assassination Of Gianni Versace: American Crime Story (FX) and Escape at Dannemora (Showtime) with five each; The Marvelous Mrs. Maisel (Amazon) and Sharp Objects (HBO) each had four. Winners will be revealed at the Critics’ Choice Awards gala, broadcast live on The CW on Sunday, January 13, at 7p. Doctor Who will return for a new season in early 2020 with Jodie Whittaker onboard. In the U.S., the season was up 47% versus last time around, averaging 1.6 million viewers. An accident during a Brooklyn location shoot for Starz drama Power caused the death of 63-year-old production assistant Pedro Jiminez, who was struck by an SUV while setting up parking cones. The show has temporarily shut down production. |
