The NBA called off scheduled its schedule media sessions in China on Wednesday for the Brooklyn Nets and Los Angeles Lakers battle set in Shanghai, with questions remaining on whether the exhibition will now take place at all following a fallout that began with Houston Rockets general manager Daryl Morey posting a tweet last week in support of protesters in Hong Kong. An NBA Cares event in Shanghai slated to benefit Special Olympics was also called off, in addition to fan night festivities. The teams are also supposed to play Saturday in Shenzhen with NBA Commissioner Adam Silver telling players that the league’s intention remains to play the games as scheduled. Meanwhile, Chinese smartphone maker Vivo became the latest Chinese company that appeared to have suspended ties with the league. The AP writes that a bipartisan group of lawmakers — including Republican Sen. Ted Cruz of Texas and Democratic Rep. Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez of New York - sent a letter to NBA Commissioner Adam Silver stating the NBA should show the “courage and integrity” to stand up to the Chinese government, noting that “You have more power to take a stand than most of the Chinese government’s targets and should have the courage and integrity to use it,” the lawmakers wrote. PROGRAMMING The NFL is reports that NFL Media consumption figures continue to spike through week five of the season, reporting that over 142 million viewers have watched NFL games with viewership up 6%. In addition, the league reports that the entire list of top 20 TV shows this season are made up of NFL games, with the Dallas Cowboys anchoring each of the top three matchups. On digital channels alone, the league is reporting a 51% uptick over last year, averaging 502,000 viewers. PGA TOUR Champions and Ascension announced a four-year partnership to host a new professional golf tournament in St. Louis. The Ascension Charity Classic will debut Sept. 28 – Oct. 4, 2020 at Norwood Hills Country Club, the first time the PGA TOUR has hosted an annual event in the St. Louis region since 2001. The 54-hole stroke play golf tournament will feature World Golf Hall of Fame members and top PGA TOUR Champions professionals competing in this inaugural championship. Sunday’s Panthers/Bucs matchup in London will see NFL Network carry the telecast at 9:30a out of Tottenham Hotspur Stadium. Combate Americas announced the details for a battle between Tito Ortiz and Alberto El Patrón (formerly “Alberto Del Rio” of the WWE) in a live, national Pay-Per-View television broadcast from Hidalgo, Texas on Dec. 7. In addition, the pair, who will face off at a 210-pound catchweight, have agreed to an “winner take all” title belt challenge. If Ortiz emerges victorious in the bout, he will take possession of El Patrón’s WWE title belt. If El Patrón wins the fight, however, Ortiz will relinquish possession of his UFC title belt to his opponent. Speaking of MMA, Friday sees the Professional Fighters League serve up its one-night playoff format to the Mandalay Bay Events Center in Las Vegas. Winners will advance to the 2019 PFL World Championship on NYE in NYC, where a title and million-dollar prize is on the line. The 2019 PFL Playoffs begin at 8p on ESPN+, then the action continues on ESPN2 and in Spanish on ESPN Deportes at 10p. Peyton’s Places debuts Episode 14: Brett Favre on Sunday on ESPN+, as Peyton travels to Green Bay to visit with the Hall of Fame Packers quarterback.
