| | | | | COOL In cool temperate gardens, spring is in the air and roses are putting on some smashing growth. To keep them tip top, treat them to a fortnightly foliar feed as buds appear. Summer stunners in the cottage garden, gladioli corms are ready to go into the ground. Plant in a sunny spot at the back of a garden bed, and in a couple of months, you’ll be “glad” you did. Silverbeet seeds are ready to be sown. Soak in water overnight, sow direct where they will grow leaving about 30cms between plants. A good feed with aged chook poo will see these boom!TEMPERATE If you’ve got a hot spot or bare pot in your warm temperate garden, why not grow a geranium or two? Tough plants with gorgeous flowers and stunning scents, they love a super sunny spot. Blooming at the moment is the native Bulbine Lily (Bulbine bulbosa), their bright yellow flower heads providing stunning pops of colour. Plant in drifts at your place, in full sun to part shade. Find a corner of the vegie patch and throw in a rockmelon seed or or two. These small vines are happy in almost any garden and their sweet fleshy fruits will rock your summer fruit salads.SUBTROPICAL If you’ve struggled to grow spuds in the sub-tropics, whack in a Country Potato, Plectranthus rotundifolius. This vigorous tropical shrub produces delicious tubers which can be baked, fried or roasted. It’s a great weekend to treat your cropping vegetables (like eggplants, tomatoes and capsicums) to a feed. Aged compost and manures, pelletised or liquid organic fertilisers are perfect. Head to the worm farm and clear out some vermicompost. Pile the castings in the top tray into a cone shape, wait ten minutes until the worms have wriggled deeper and remove the castings.TROPICAL Tropical gardeners, have a grow at Shiso (Perilla frutescens). A vigorous annual herb, this bushy plant is great in full sun to part shade, and is prized for it’s delicate basil, mint and fennel aromatics and flavour. With the weather warming, turf is growing, so make sure you stay on top of your garden edging and stop the growth of grasses into your garden beds. Tart fruits on a sweet, slender tree, the Large Leaf Tamarind (Diploglottis australis) is a beaut fruit for the backyard. This native Australian bears masses of sour fruits over summerARID Gardeners in arid zones, it’s time to heat things up in the patch and plant chillies. Find a bright, sunny spot, add some compost and plant a delicious mix of varieties from mild to mind-blowing. If you’ve been harvesting asparagus, it’s a great time to give your plants a good feed with some chicken manure and allow the plants to recover before harvesting again in summer. Romantic, rambling and really beautiful, the Banksia Rose (Rosa banksiae Lutea) is perfect for a sunny spot. Free of thorns, this quick growing climber will reward you with masses of delicate yellow flowers. | | |
