| 22/March/23 | Outrage as the Alliance for Science tries to co-opt the legacy of Wangari Maathai The Alliance for Science, the Gates-funded PR outfit for pushing GMOs in Africa, is trying to co-opt the legacy of the late Wangari Maathai (1940-2011), the celebrated Kenyan environmentalist who supported organic farming and condemned “the patenting of life forms and the genetic engineering which it stimulates” as a crime against humanity. In a move that the renowned Nigerian environmentalist and poet Nnimmo Bassey called “truly shameless” and that other African environmentalists have also condemned, the Alliance for Science tweeted a graphic that included a photo of Wangari Maathai next to the all-caps message, “CELEBRATING THE LEGACY OF WANGARI MAATHAI”. GMWatch German youth associations demand protection of GMO-free food production German youth organisations have published a strong resolution on the topic of new genetic engineering from the perspective of young people who would like to make – or have just started to make – a livelihood in the food sector, whether production, processing or marketing. The resolution opposes the EU Commission's plan to deregulate new genetic engineering techniques and demands the continued freedom to produce organic and non-GMO foods. The youth organisations want thorough risk assessment for new GMOs, traceability, labelling that includes the final product, and the ability to protect the food chain from GMO contamination. Their call counters narratives by pro-GMO lobbyists that younger people are more accepting of new GM technologies and products. GMWatch Invitation to event on new GMOs and seed marketing: Reforms threaten peasant farmers’ rights European Coordination Via Campesina (ECVC) invites you to an event (in person or online) to discuss the impacts of the potential deregulation of new GMOs on peasant farmers’ rights and the GMO-free agricultural sector as a whole. Among the speakers will be MEPs, representatives of ECVC and the EU Commission, GMWatch's Claire Robinson, and molecular geneticist Dr Michael Antoniou.
