| 06/June/23 | Real pesticide reduction instead of empty promises for GMOs In a spate of political horse-trading, the EU Commission is planning to sell the deregulation of new GMOs with EU pesticide reduction (Sustainable Use Regulation, or SUR for short) as a "package deal". However, an analysis by foodwatch shows that the hypothetical promises of new pest- or disease-resistant new GM (new genomic techniques, NGT) crops are a red herring. "New GM crops do not bring pesticide reduction – on the contrary," say the NGOs GLOBAL 2000, Bund für Umwelt und Naturschutz Deutschland (BUND) and foodwatch. "Rather, deregulation of EU GMO law would give agribusinesses like Bayer or Corteva even greater control over our seeds and prop up the business model of herbicide-resistant seeds including pesticides in the package. The losers from this toxic deal would be the environment, biodiversity, and consumers and farmers." GMWatch Canada: Time's up for glyphosate in Quebec City Quebec City is preparing to ban glyphosate-based pesticides. If municipal councillors approve the draft by-law on the use and sale of on the use and sale of pesticides proposed by Bruno Marchand's Mayorship, Quebec City will become the third city in Quebec to ban the sale of this most commonly used herbicide in Canada. The by-law is expected to be submitted to the next city council for adoption on Tuesday. Following public consultations, the mayor's office concluded that it was responding to "public demands" regarding the spraying of harmful chemicals. "This action is part of the city's commitment to preserving biodiversity and providing residents with healthy, sustainable living environments," explained the mayor's office. Under the proposed legislation, the sale of glyphosate for domestic use will be banned in Quebec City from 2024. With the aim of "further restricting access to self-service pesticides", the city will exclude the sale of products containing glyphosate, including the weedkiller Roundup, from retail outlets.
