GMO-Free Regions Organic processing and trade body calls on EU legislators to stand up for agroecology, which excludes gene editing In a position paper, the organic processing and trade organisation OPTA Europe calls on EU legislators to stand firmly on the side of agroecology: “As the EU stands at a crossroads concerning the future of our food system, we invite lawmakers to stand firmly on the side of agroecology, which excludes gene editing”. OPTA Europe asks the Parliament and Council to amend the Commission’s GMO deregulation proposal with binding provisions requiring: * Mandatory traceability and labelling of all new GMOs to protect the integrity of the organic supply chain * In line with the polluter-pays-principle, new GMO manufacturers to bear the additional costs related to prevention and monitoring in the organic supply chain, as well as a compensation to the organic operator when damage or presence of new GMOs is confirmed. Bioeco Actual Glyphosate is polluting our waters all across Europe According to EU pesticide legislation, the use of pesticides should not have any adverse impacts on human and animal health or the environment. But new water sampling and testing by Pesticide Action Network Europe shows glyphosate doesn't meet that criterion. Glyphosate and/or its toxic metabolite AMPA were detected in 17 out of 23 samples (74%), in 11 out of the 12 countries in the study. Considering that the drinking water safety limit for pesticide active substances and their relevant metabolites is 0.1 μg/L, five out of 23 water samples (22%), collected in Austria, Spain, Poland, and Portugal, contained glyphosate at levels not suitable for human consumption. A Portuguese sample contained 3 μg/L glyphosate, which is 30 times higher than the safety limit for human consumption. Pesticide Action Network Europe Glyphosate isn't safe for health and the environment – the scientific evidence A conference on the risks that glyphosate poses to health and the environment will be held in the European Parliament this coming Monday. Hosted by Green and Socialist MEPs and Pesticide Action Network Europe, and taking place on 18 September, 2023, at 14:00-16:00 CET, the conference has a stellar lineup of scientist speakers, including Prof Chris Portier, Dr Peter Clausing, Prof Michael Antoniou, Dr Daniele Mandrioli, and Dr Johann G. Zaller. Register here for in-person or online attendance. Pesticide Action Network Europe We hope you’ve enjoyed this newsletter, which is made possible by readers’ donations.
