| 14/November/23 | Scientists call on minister to say no to glyphosate licence A group of 159 scientists from universities and institutes across The Netherlands have made a last-ditch appeal to farm minister Piet Adema to vote against EU plans to licence glyphosate herbicides for a further 10 years. The scientists argue that it is impossible to say if glyphosate is safe given the current assessment system used in Europe. A majority of MPs have also called on the minister to vote no, rather than abstain. The scientists include Nijmegen neurologist and Parkinson’s expert Bas Bloem, Leiden toxicologist Martina Vijver and Utrecht researcher Daniel Figueiredo. In the letter, they say the European safety body EFSA has not taken all the relevant research into account when recommending the licence extension. DutchNews America's frightening new bat lab: $12m taxpayer-funded NIH research facility in Colorado will import bats from Asia and infect them with deadly diseases A new taxpayer-funded lab is being built in Colorado that will import bats from around the world and experiment on dangerous diseases. The multi-million-dollar project is a collaboration between Dr Anthony Fauci's old department at the National Institutes of Health, Colorado State University (CSU) and EcoHealth Alliance (EHA), a controversial research group at the centre of the Covid lab leak theory, which is headed by Peter Daszak. Proposals show how the 14,000sq-ft facility could store and study some of the most transmissible pathogens on the planet - including Ebola, Nipah virus and the virus causing COVID-19. Republican Senators still reeling from a lack of answers about the origins of COVID said they fear the facility - which has not started construction but is due to open in 2025 - could start a pandemic on US soil. Daily Mail New GM techniques – time for the European Parliament to stand up for its citizens Negotiations are in full swing on the European Commission’s proposal for a regulation on new GMO techniques (new genomic techniques, NGTs). With the Commission proposing a full deregulation of this type of gene editing, should the proposal become law, it would unleash untested and unlabelled GMOs onto European fields, into the supermarkets and on to people’s plates – GMOs that European citizens do not want in their food. In an event at the European Parliament tomorrow, co-organised by ENGA (The European Non-GMO Industry Association) and hosted by MEPs Maria Noichl and Christophe Clergeau MEPs (S&D), MEPs from across the political spectrum will come together with companies and business from different parts of the food sector (retail, food manufacturers and the organic sector) to debate this important legislation.
