| 22/January/25 | There is no “magic threshold” for new GMO safety Testbiotech has published a new backgrounder summarising recent research showing clear evidence that the EU Commission proposal for the future regulation of plants obtained from new genetic engineering (new genomic techniques, NGT) is inadequate. It would be outdated before the new regulation could be implemented. The proposal is based on the fundamental misconception that there is a threshold of 20 mutations for NGT effects that would not require risk assessment. However, recent scientific publications have found undeniable evidence that there is no such thing as a "magic threshold". Testbiotech US, Canada Alert: No GMO salad Bayer (formerly Monsanto) is getting ready to sell genetically engineered mustard greens that are gene edited to taste less mustardy. These salad greens could be sold in grocery stores in the US and Canada in early 2025. Bayer also wants to sell the GM seeds to home gardeners and market gardeners. These genetically modified leafy greens are the first gene-edited vegetable in North America (produced using CRISPR), and only the second genetically modified vegetable grown in Canada (after GM sweet corn). Bayer is testing the market to expand into other gene-edited fruits and vegetables. If you're in the US or Canada, join the campaign to say no to GMO salad. CBAN Mexico: Tortilla industry supports ban on GM corn There's been a backlash in Mexico against the pro-GMO corn decision by the trade panel in the US-Mexico dispute, which said Mexico could not restrict imports of US GM corn. Mexico City has declared itself a "territory free of GM corn". And the tortilla industry has backed President Claudia Sheinbaum's plan to make a constitutional amendment to ban the cultivation of GM corn in Mexico, which the industry said would not make tortillas more expensive or more scarce, according to the secretary of the state delegation, Alfonso Anaya Castro. The amendment, which is expected to be approved in the Congress of the Union in February, does not put at risk the supply of corn for the production of dough and tortillas, considering that Mexico has the capacity to produce corn, and even import non-GMO corn, he emphasised. Timothy A. Wise on X; diariocambio22 Tim Wise on the battle for the future of food Watch Timothy A. Wise's 30-minute talk about Bill Gates' solution to child malnutrition — not more or better food, but the dietary equivalent of a tech upgrade on bouillon – and the resounding failure of Gates' Green Revolution projects in Africa. Wise asks: Why are expensive inputs being pushed while brilliant low-cost alternatives get ignored? The answer: Because agribusiness writes the policies... literally. In Malawi, Wise learned that an author of their draconian seed bill — that would have outlawed valued indigenous seeds — worked for Monsanto. Wise says, "Probably no single individual is more responsible for worsening child malnutrition in Africa than Bill Gates. His myopic promotion of monoculture, chemical-based farming of starchy staples (has) reduced nutritional diversity for Africa's poor rural children." Real Organic Project Impossible Foods prevails in EU patent dispute A decision by the European Patent Office (EPO) to revoke a key EU patent granted to Impossible Foods has been overturned following a lengthy appeals process. The patent in question (EP2943072 B1) covers the use of Impossible Foods’ heme proteins (made by a genetically engineered yeast strain) and flavour precursor molecules to modulate the flavour and aroma of meat substitutes. It was revoked by the EPO in 2022 on the grounds that it was insufficiently novel, a decision that was overturned this month by the EPO’s Boards of Appeal. The move follows the resolution of Impossible’s protracted legal dispute with Motif Foodworks, which resulted in an agreement whereby Impossible Foods took over Motif’s heme-related business.
