| 16/April/20 | New model aimed at predicting unwanted changes in GM trees falls short A new computer model aims to predict genetic changes that have unintended consequences in trees that researchers genetically modify. However, it is highly unlikely to be effective as it greatly underestimates the complexity of genetic functioning, warns Dr Michael Antoniou, a genetic engineer unconnected with the research. GMWatch GM Freeze is facing closure – can you help? Funding cuts mean that the UK’s umbrella campaign challenging the use of GM in food and farming is facing permanent closure this summer. GM Freeze needs £25,000 to keep going but supporters are being asked to chip in £7,000 to ensure that, if the closure goes ahead, it happens in a way that helps others keep fighting for a responsible, fair and sustainable food system. Note: GM Freeze is totally independent from GMWatch. To distinguish, GMWatch is good at flagging up important and developing GM issues worldwide, but when it comes to campaigning and applying pressure in the UK, GM Freeze has both the expertise and a proven track record. Can biological weapons be developed to only infect a single person? And why is the US government researching how to use insects as taxis for viruses? Apple Podcasts For Brazilian agribusiness, leaving the Amazon forested is "a problem" Agribusiness proponents in the Brazilian states of Rondônia, Acre and Amazonas plan to create a joint agricultural area, Amacro, inspired by the successful multi-state Matopiba region that is now the country’s grain-growing heartland. But studies show that the development of the Cerrado biome in Matopiba has resulted in massive deforestation — and critics warn that this will be repeated in the Amazon with Amacro. That’s been confirmed by the project’s founder, Assuero Doca Veronez, who says “deforestation is a synonym for progress,” and that “all the areas within the legal limits will definitely be cleared". Veronez also says that Acre state has “some of the best land in Brazil. But this land has one problem: it’s covered in forest".
