| | UK ACTION: GM groups call on the public to ask Ministers to reject plans to de-regulate gene editing Three of the UK’s largest GM campaigns – GM Freeze, Beyond GM and GMWatch – have joined together to oppose an amendment to the Agriculture Bill that would give the Secretary of State for the Environment, Food and Rural Affairs George Eustice, the power to change the definition of a GMO and re-classify many forms of gene editing as non-GM. The amendment will be discussed at Committee Stage in the Lords, beginning 7 July and if adopted it would mean that those techniques were no longer regulated (meaning no safety checks or GM labelling) and could be used on our farms or in our food without our knowledge or consent. The groups are asking that citizens write to George Eustice MP and Lord Gardiner of Kimble, who are tasked with seeing the Agriculture Bill through to completion, and urge them to reject the amendment. GMWatch UK: Scientifically indefensible, anti-democratic, and harmful to trade GMWatch opposes the amendment (see above) on the grounds that it will place public health and the environment at risk. We've produced a detailed and referenced article which explains the reasons why the amendment is scientifically and legally unsound, as well as anti-democratic and harmful to trade. We also deconstruct some of the myths that are being claimed for gene editing, such as that it is precise and gives rise to predictable outcomes. GMWatch US ACTION: Get GMOs out of Impossible Burgers – petition Impossible Foods makes Impossible Burgers using a GMO ingredient called heme that's never been eaten before. And the GMO soy that is used in the burgers has also been sprayed with glyphosate, a possible carcinogen.
