| 13/January/21 | Exposing the truth on new-generation GMOs – New briefing For years the biotech industry, with some supporters in academic circles, has run a media campaign claiming that CRISPR- and other gene-edited crops will help us fix the most serious problems in our farming systems. Friends of the Earth Europe has compiled a short briefing to explain where the real solutions are and why we have scientific and legal reasons to keep them regulated as GMOs, as the European Court of Justice ruled in 2018. Friends of the Earth Europe New York State bans glyphosate/Roundup on state land, while advocates push for organic land management New York State is set to prohibit on December 31, 2021 the use of glyphosate herbicide on all state property. The state legislature passed the legislation in July 2020. The move is an important recognition that the Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) is not adequately protecting people and the environment from hazardous pesticides. However, the law’s ability to improve these protections will depend upon the management approach that replaces glyphosate herbicide. Jay Feldman, executive director of Beyond Pesticides, said, “A transition away from Roundup and other glyphosate-based pesticides must reject the use of regrettable substitutes, and embrace sound organic principles and practices." Beyond Pesticides Special issue of journal on glyphosate A special issue on "The science and politics of glyphosate" was published a few months ago by the European Journal of Risk Regulation, containing a range of articles presenting various problems with the authorisation of glyphosate in Europe in 2017. GMWatch editor Claire Robinson is an author, together with experts on toxicology, risk assessment policy and law, of one of the articles, which deals with shortcomings in the pesticide risk assessment process and how improvements could be made. You can find the issue with all the different articles following this link given above. European Journal of Risk Regulation Waitrose boss: Customers may not want to buy gene-edited food In the wake of the launch of the UK government's public consultation on de-regulating gene editing, James Bailey, executive director at Waitrose, says customers may not want to buy gene-edited food. He said, "This would be one of those things [where] our customers demand to know where their products have come from and in what way they have been produced." Farmers Guardian [register with name and email address for free access to limited number of articles] Gene editing is not a silver bullet. It is a distraction Gene editing is being presented by the UK government as a silver bullet when it can only be a "sticking plaster" – diverting vital investment and attention from farmer-driven action and research for agroecology which could be yielding results right now, writes Louise Payton of the Soil Association. Soil Association Buying GMO soy is endorsing deforestation of the Amazon – French president Will Europe stop buying GMO soy because if its devastating ecological impact? France's President Macron said, “To continue to depend on Brazilian soybeans would be to endorse the deforestation of the Amazon. We are consistent with our ecological ambitions; we are fighting to produce soy in Europe!" Emmanuel Macron via Twitter Donations from Bayer and others supported association that called for the pro-Trump march Deutsche Telekom and Bayer co-financed a group that called for the pro-Trump demonstration before the storming of the US Capitol.
