Burnout has always been a part of nursing, an effect of long working hours in physically and often emotionally taxing environments. The COVID pandemic exacerbated those factors and added some of its own.
It also taught some valuable lessons on the programs and processes to decrease burnout and improve the work environment. But for some, those well-intentioned changes may not come soon enough.
