THE STORY

Today, British Prime Minister Theresa May will tell the EU ‘you’ve got mail, guvna.’

WHAT ARE YOU TALKING ABOUT?

Brexit. It’s officially happening. This morning, May will send the president of the EU a letter to kick off what’s expected to be two years of divorce talks.

HOW’S THIS GOING TO WORK?

A lot of late nights. Many Brits voted to break up with the EU in part over worries about its loose immigration policies. May will push for Britain to get back full control over who comes and goes. This also means the UK would have to pull out of the EU’s ‘single market’ - aka the free movement of goods and people. May’s hoping to replace it with some kind of new free trade deal with EU countries. But some EU members are saying ‘you can’t have your free trade cake and eat it too.’

ANYTHING ELSE?

The Scots are not alright. They’re a part of the UK. But they voted against this divorce. And now, they want to vote on whether to live with their EU parents instead of Britain. This is the second time in recent years that Scotland’s considered leaving the UK. In order to vote again they need permission from the British gov. And Britain’s saying ‘a little busy at the moment, so no.’ Maybe the Scots can just move to “Eden” instead.

WHAT TO SAY WHEN THE PERSON NEXT TO YOU IN THE MOVIE THEATER WON’T STOP TALKING…

Silence. Yesterday, it came out that the Trump administration may have tried to prevent Sally Yates - the former acting attorney general - from testifying on Russia’s interference in the election. Earlier this year, President Trump fired Yates after she told the Justice Department not to defend his OG travel ban because she didn’t think it was legal. She also gave the White House an early heads up that former national security adviser Mike Flynn was lying about his contact with Russia’s ambassador to the US. Shortly after, Flynn was forced to resign. Fast forward a few weeks, and the House committee looking into the Trump campaign’s possible ties to Russia asked Yates to testify. She agreed. That was supposed to happen today, with a cameo from former CIA Director John Brennan. Both Yates and Brennan had reportedly said ahead of time that their testimony would probably go against statements made by White House officials. The hearing was canceled. It’s unclear why, but some are saying it looks like the White House was trying to prevent Yates from testifying. The White House said ‘erroneous.’ And cue the joke about Russian salad dressing.

WHAT TO SAY WHEN YOU KEEP SEEING ADS FOR THAT BATHING SUIT YOU JUST GOOGLED...

This isn’t going away. Yesterday, the House passed a bill to let Internet service providers sell your info…without getting your OK first. Internet providers (like Verizon and Comcast) have access to lots of data, like your location, browsing history, Social Security number. The NBD things. Last year, the FCC moved to prevent providers from selling that info to advertisers without telling you first. Supporters say the rules are needed to protect peoples’ privacy. Critics say the rules hurt businesses and are unnecessary given existing privacy policies. Next, the bill heads to President Trump’s desk. He’s expected to sign on the dotted line. PSA: snail mail is still a thing.

WHAT TO SAY WHEN YOU FIND $20 ON THE SIDEWALK…

Win. Yesterday, Iceland reportedly became the first country ever to introduce a bill that requires employers to prove they pay men and women the same. And it’s already looking like it has enough support to pass. The world has this problem. It’s called the wage gap. In Iceland, women make on average up to 18% less than men (in the US, it’s 21%). Iceland’s over it. The country’s already ranked really high when it comes to gender equality, and has laws that make sure women are represented on corporate boards. But it’s not stopping there. The proposed law would require companies with more than 25 employees to show they’re in line with equal pay rules. They’d also be audited. Iceland says it’s going to get rid of the gender pay gap in the next five years. Money in the bank.
