Hello, Data gets called a lot of things: the new oil, the new gold, the new, uh... bacon. But no matter what you call it, there's no denying its value to those who collect and sell it — which usually isn't you or me. At Mozilla we believe that to build trustworthy AI and a healthier internet, we have to rethink how data is governed. That's why I’m excited to share with you our latest publication which digs deep into questions around data and power. It explores how people and communities can be data beneficiaries instead of just data sources. The research is divided into three sections: we look at existing alternative models, we examine who's building practical solutions, and (because good intentions aren't enough to fix a power imbalance) we analyze what could go wrong. The most exciting part about the research was finding 110 initiatives from around the world that prove that how we govern data today doesn't have to be how we govern it tomorrow. I wrote about why and how Mozilla decided to take up this research, and I invite you to dive into the report. Thank you for reading, J. Bob Alotta VP, Global Programs Mozilla Foundation | |
