A woman says to a man over coffee, "Just because I'm questioning my beliefs doesn't mean I'm being deceived!" He responds, "And that just proves to me that you are!"
In the religious culture I grew up in, Satan and his demons played a major role.
The kind of logic used in the cartoon was used against me all the time.
Someone accused me of being in darkness. I say I can see just fine. They say my eyes have just adjusted to be able to see in darkness!
Someone says I’m being deceived.
I say no I’m not. They say the problem with deception is you don’t know it’s happening!
Someone says I’m possessed by the demon of falsehood (or whatever). I say no I’m not. They say that’s exactly what a demon of falsehood would say!
In other words, damned if you do damned if you don’t.
Right?
At some point I realized that these were all scare tactics to keep my beliefs in line.
I had to make the very courageous decision to find out for myself.
