Chip Flory shares his morning report from southeast South Dakota and Brian Grete does the same from Ohio. There's a common theme: It’s doggone tough out there, Flory describes, and soybeans on Grete's route look somewhat better than corn, but there's still a wide range of quality.

In times of high commodity prices, it's not uncommon to see land values rise, but there have been some record-setting values and percentage increases this year. For example, Iowa land values have increased 21.4% to $9,400 per acre; South Dakota, up nearly 19%; and Minnesota, 17.4%.

Farmers who don’t comply with the recommendations won’t face any consequences, said the spokeswoman for the ag department. They would, however, forgo financial aid and grants from the government.
