Purnell Steen & the Five Points Ambassadors

Purnell Steen and The Five Points Ambassadors (also known as LeJazz Machine) is a band dedicated to playing and preserving the music of Denver’s legendary Five Points neighborhood. The Blues-oriented Hard Bop music is basically Swing style. Denver’s own scintillating Myra Warren rounds out the ensemble. Celebrating Juneteenth has been a long tradition for the Five Points Ambassadors, and they will definitely Swing and Sway the Five Points Way! Ever the storyteller, Purnell will share the histories of the Black artists who have worked and played in Five Points.

Bailey Hinkley Grogan performs Nancy Wilson

Bailey Hinkley Grogan brings to life the legacy and music of legendary jazz vocalist Nancy Wilson. Grogan’s bright, yet melancholy sound and effervescent improvisation style is a reflection of her deep study into the jazz idiom while simultaneously playing homage to Wilson. Hear a tribute to Wilson’s album’s “Nancy Wilson/Cannonball Adderley”, “Something Wonderful”, and more!

Anisha Rush, saxophonist and composer, brings a fresh sound to the bandstand. She explores all sounds of Black American Music, leaving no stone unturned. Enjoy a night of jazz, hip hop, R&B, and a little gospel. She is lucky to be joined by her musical brothers, Solomon Chapman on keys, Will Gains on bass, and Matt Campbell on drums.

Splifftet

Making their mark on the world of improvisational music, Splifftet is defining their sound through innovations in modern improvisationals composition and language. The group features drummer Maliq Wynn, saxophonist Chris Ferrari, vibraphonist Alec Streete, pianist/keyboardist Max Moore, and bassist Tony Golden. Splifftet seeks to create a visceral experience for the listener via the spectrum of sonic expression.

Ken Walker Sextet

The Ken Walker Sextet is an iconic and beloved jazz group which has played together for more than two decades. The music is always swinging, often funky, and sometimes even profound. The repertoire ranges from jazz standards, to post bop tunes, original compositions, and always, always inspired by Eddie Harris! Hearing the band is always an experience to remember!

Denver Jazz Club Youth All Stars

The All-Stars perform during breaks of the professional bands at each Denver Jazz Club monthly session. The band has been featured with many professional bands including the Preservation Hall Jazz Band and Queen City Jazz Band. The Denver Jazz Club Youth All-Stars have performed at the Evergreen Jazz Festival, the Denver Vintage Jazz Festival, the Sacramento Jazz Festival, the Sacramento Hot Jazz Jubilee, the Montreux, Switzerland Jazz Festival, the Assisi, Italy Music Festival, the Umbria, Italy Jazz Festival, the Expo in Citta Festival (Milan, Italy), and the Kongsberg, Norway Jazz Festival and will be going on a European performance tour during July of 2022. This event will not have food service. Beverage service will be available, however.

Miguel Espinoza Flamenco Fusion twists Flamenco, jazz, Cuban and classical Indian musical forms into intoxicating journeys that thrill audiences! Described by Guitar Player Magazine as “mesmerizing”, Miguel Espinoza has recorded and performed with Howard Levy, Bela Fleck, Kai Eckhardt, Kitaro, Tuck and Patti, Rita Moreno and Ben Vareen. Special guest, Grammy-nominated vibraphonist Dave Hagedorn, will join Flamenco Fusion! He has recorded with the George Russell Living Time Orchestra on Blue Note Recordings (nominated for a Grammy award), Brian Setzer Big Band, Pete Whitman X-tet, and many more. Flamenco Fusion performs to sold out audiences across Colorado, and were the winners of Denver’s Westword Magazine 2019 “Best of World Music.”

Chloe Feoranzo is a clarinetist, saxophonist, sloth enthusiast, & vocalist who has been performing professionally since the age of 15. She now resides in New Orleans, LA as a freelance musician, full-time member of Shake ‘Em Up Jazz Band and has been touring part-time with Postmodern Jukebox and Asleep At The Wheel. LAPOMPE is a Denver-based Hot-Club Jazz group that fuses eclectic American standards with french ballads, burning Django Reinhardt tunes, and soulful originals.
The band has been nominated by multiple publications for best jazz band on the front range and won the 2017 Producers Choice award at the Westword Music Showcase. By combining swinging vocals and high energy instrumentals they are keeping vintage jazz alive for a whole new generation.

JJ’s new project, KALIMARI DESERT strives to see just how far the jazz trio can go. Their instrumentation of vibraphone, bass, and drums provides just enough sonic information to be inviting, but lends itself well to heavy improvisation and experimentation, which all members of the group (JJ Mazza on drums, Lazlo Torok on vibraphone and Hunter Roberts on bass) run with and excel at. For this performance only they are joined by the incredible Shane Endsley!

One on One is a quartet which showcases Motown, Classic Soul and Old School Rhythm and Blues “Just the way you like it”. This quintessential quartet formed in July 2003 by its leader and one of its lead vocalist Ron Ivory features songs from the 60’s thru the 90’s with a dash of today’s contemporary music. Includes songs by artists such as The Temptations, The Four Tops, Marvin Gaye, The Supremes, The Whispers, The Contours, Al Green, The O’Jays, The Spinners, The Dells, Wilson Pickett and many more. Otis Taylor

Otis Taylor grew up in Denver, but like the old blues song said, he was born in Chicago in 1948. The first instrument Taylor learned to play was the banjo, but he soon rejected the banjo for its association with the racist American South. Taylor would eventually return to the banjo upon discovering its African roots. Like so many musicians in Denver, Taylor drew inspiration from time spent at the Denver Folklore Center founded by Harry Tuft, where he first heard Piedmont, Delta, country, and Chicago blues artists like Son House, Muddy Waters, and Mississippi Fred McDowell. He learned to play guitar and harmonica and while still in his teens he formed a band called the Butterscotch Fire Department and later the Otis Taylor Blues Band.
