TOP OF THE AGENDA | Eyewitnesses describe India festival crush |
|
| | BBC reporters have described 'absolute chaos' on the ground. Credit: AFP | Families are desperately searching for their missing relatives following a crowd crush at the Kumbh Mela religious festival in northern India. Eyewitnesses and hospital sources tell the BBC that at least 12 people have been killed, although an official death toll has yet to be released. Eyewitnesses describe being trampled by huge swells of people coming towards them in the darkness. Umesh Agrawal, a visitor from Delhi, told the BBC how the crowd began falling on top of each other after a few people tripped. The BBC's Samira Hussain describes scenes of "absolute chaos", with clothes, shoes, blankets and backpacks strewn on the ground as crowds tried to escape. Officials had predicted up to 100 million people were expected to attend the bathing day on the banks of the river Ganges. |

And finally... | Thousands of visitors have travelled to the streets of Lerwick in Shetland for the famous Up Helly Aa fire festival. The spectacular torchlit procession, which celebrates Norse heritage in the UK’s most northerly islands, saw a replica of a Viking ship set on fire and people wearing custom-made armour, axes and shields. Youngsters also got a chance to set their very own small replica ship alight. | |
