TOP OF THE AGENDA | Earthquake strikes Tibet holy city |
|
| | More than 1,000 buildings have been damaged by the earthquake, according to Chinese state media. Credit: Reuters | An earthquake hit Tibet's holy Shigatse city in the mountainous Tingri county on Tuesday morning. At least 95 people have been confirmed dead and 130 are injured, Chinese state media say. The earthquake's death toll is one of the highest recorded in recent years in China, which annexed Tibet in the 1950s and has since exercised tight control over the region. Sitting at the foot of Mount Everest, Tingri county is a popular base for climbers preparing to ascend the world's tallest peak. Tremors were also felt in neighbouring Nepal and parts of India. |

| | | Gangtuo dam: The region's seismic activity was one of the concerns motivating critics of a dam and hydropower plant China plans to build in Tibet. Watch: Rescue teams are racing to find survivors as temperatures, already around -8C (17.6F) during the day, are expected to drop to -18 in the evening. | |
