As long as humans have been building shelters, we have sought myriad ways to connect our homes to their natural surroundings as well as provide a buffer of privacy. In the 1950s, an oil speculator in Mississippi commissioned Frank Lloyd Wright to build a boldly angular family residence with an intimate relationship to its wooded suburban setting; in Mexico, a three-story villa all but hidden from the road and cleaving to a steep cliff above the Pacific Ocean offers a daring form of retreat; and in Nagpur, India, a multigenerational family shacks up in a six-story glass-walled tower that offers both common spaces for being together and private apartments.
