THE DONKEY’S DECLINE: Two decades ago, Democrats controlled all levers of power in Louisiana. Today, Republicans occupy every statewide office except governor, and are one seat away from holding at least two thirds of the seats in both the Senate and the House. And the situation for Democrats appears to be worsening: Six months before the qualifying period for the gubernatorial race, they have no announced candidate for any statewide office – other than a little-known LaSalle Parish schoolteacher who pulled 2% of the vote for a state Senate seat in 2019. Recreational pot remains illegal though it has been decriminalized, making possession similar to a traffic violation. Therapeutic pot is available, not cheaply, through the state’s medical program. Meanwhile, the market for the hemp-derived THC, the psychoactive chemical found in marijuana, has blown up, offering far lower prices than the medical products.
