dear designboom reader, recent chair designs explore the other uses of sawdust, seeds, and even potatoes. take renaud defrancesco’s briket chair and gisung han’s blooming decay stool. the former, standing tall with its nine legs, emerges entirely from potato and sawdust scraps. the latter, crafted from potato-based plastic, has wildflower seeds so that it blossoms into flowers as it decomposes. mirrors and sponges have just been transformed into chairs, too. for instance, thousands of mirror tiles make up HFA-studio’s monobloc chair, making it glitter like a disco ball for some groovy reclining. a subtly fun sitting experience is what ECAL’s compressed furniture can be about, its flattened sponge expanding into functional chairs once it is soaked in water. thanks for reading! matthew burgos | editor |
