architecture this week, after years of planning and construction, the much-anticipated V&A dundee is finally ready to welcome its first visitors. designed by japanese architect kengo kuma, the building contains scotland’s first design museum and seeks to investigate the international importance of design while presenting the country’s outstanding achievements in the field. the project, which took three and a half years to complete, stands at the center of a £1 billion transformation of the dundee waterfront, once part of the city’s docklands. meanwhile, designboom was in toronto for the reveal of the reassembly of bjarke ingels group’s 2016 serpentine pavilion, presented by westbank. the temporary pavilion, made of 1802 stacked fiberglass units, has been brought back to life since its original introduction in london, beginning its multi-city tour. located at king and brant streets, the pixelated space provides visitors and locals of toronto with an exceptional, curated experience. |

design with autumn upon us, the design world is slowly shedding its summer clothes and launching into a new season of creative happenings ahead. designboom is kicking off fall fever with a host of exclusive programs lined up throughout the month of september, taking place across the world. we’ve partnered with IKEA, bang & olufsen, and MINI LIVING to bring you curated conversations and live events that will unearth discussions about design’s role in society, and how our lives can be shaped by creative industries. discover our programs here. designboom was also in venice for the opening of 'homo faber', an exhibit of the finest european craftsmanship with the aim of ‘crafting a more human future’. as well as being a celebration of artisanal excellence, it aims to increase the recognition for master artisans and inspire interest in their skills and talents. presented by the michelangelo foundation, featured displays include a showcase by montblanc, where artisans unearth the enduring passion and expertise that has fostered the company’s status as a great pioneer of writing culture. |

art russian artist vera shimunia swapped paint brushes for needle and thread, mastering the art of embroidery painting. in her series of intricately sewn scenes, she captures life-like clouds, rich sunsets and magnificently rainbow-hued skies. in other news, british artist paolo del toro creates large fearsome faces, sometimes spanning more than 6 feet in height. each is painstakingly made of foam and needle felted wool, expressing at once magnificence and menace. |

technology first revealed at IFA 2018, the bang & olufsen beosound edge revolutionizes the home speaker. its circular form and powerful wireless audio – created in collaboration with michael anastassiades – not only re-imagines the sound of interiors, but also the aesthetic. during the london design festival 2018, bang & olufsen and michael anastassiades present 1/6000 – an interactive sound installation that showcases the magical essence of the speaker’s design and performance. on wednesday september 19, designboom will co-host an evening in conversation with bang & olufsen and michael anastassiades. the event will be hosted by designboom editor kieron marchese from 6:00pm – 8:00pm, with the talk starting promptly at 6:30pm. as well as being streamed live on designboom’s facebook, the event will be free and open to the public to attend. join us and RSVP HERE! |

readers 314 architecture studio's la torre de la nostalgia is a residential building under construction in the heart of glyfada, a coastal suburb on the southern part of athens. the sculptural tower appears strikingly lightweight next to its neighboring typical blocks of flats thanks to its ferrocement construction, a composite material consisting of mortar reinforced with a metal mesh. meanwhile, dutch designer ward wijnant challenges the supremacy of steel by twisting iron bars into unique pieces of furniture. titled ‘twisted’, the collection comprises seven black-colored objects made of metal sheets supported by curves bent by hand. |
