technology with a consort of the world’s rarest cars and motorcycles bathing lakeside in the grounds of villa d’este at lake como, italy, the concorso d’eleganza is a weekend of automotive heaven every year. for 2019, the grand event celebrated an anniversary under the motto, 'the symphony of engines – 90 years of the concorso d’eleganza villa d’este & BMW automobiles'. crowning a best of show from a field of 50 vintage vehicles must be a near impossible task for the jury but, for 2019, an alfa romeo 8C 2900B from 1937 won the prestigious award. with designboom a guest for the celebratory occasion, we showcase five of the most unusual, exclusive cars that you would hardly ever see on the road today. also at concorso d’eleganza villa d’este, BMW motorrad presented an engaging alternative. conceived as a return to the brand’s core, but with a modern twist, the BMW motorrad concept R18 focuses on maximizing a bike’s most fundamental components. 'the biggest challenge in the design is to render everything visible,' says bart janssen groesbeek, designer of the concept bike. 'every part has a functional purpose.' the boxer engine, cradle frame, exposed universal shaft and drop-shaped fuel tank with its black paintwork and hand-applied contrast lines interpret typical design icons of BMW motorrad classics. |

readers conceived by designboom readers quatre caps, 'not longer life' is a series that reflects on the use of plastic through a reinterpretation of the some of the most famous still life paintings. the project comes in response to the startling volume of plastic that is produced every year, and the staggering length of time it will take these materials to biodegrade. with much of this consumption resulting from food packaging, the work aims to highlight the unnecessary amount of plastic that is used to wrap our fruit and vegetables. the interior of 'omakase' restaurant by shanghai hip pop design has been built to envelop guests in swathes of pink cherry blossom. situated within a renovated business center in shanghai, the brief required the creation of a space fit for the ‘romantic’ kaiseki cuisine that is served inside. as a traditional and high-quality japanese food, the team chose to complement the dishes by taking inspiration from ‘sakura rain’ – the phenomenon of cherry blossom petals falling gently to the ground in the breeze. |
