WEEK IN REVIEW jean nouvel's museum of art pudong (MAP) is now complete in shanghai's xiaolujiazui riverside district. the massive, granite-clad cultural building opens with an extensive exhibition of chinese artist cai guo-qiang titled ‘odyssey and homecoming’, featuring 119 of the artist’s signature gunpowder paintings as well as his first-ever VR work. also in china, MAD architects unveiled plans for the hainan science and technology museum in haikou city. wrapped in silver, fiber-reinforced plastic, the futuristic museum is shaped ‘like a cloud in dialogue with nature’. this week we were in london to attend an exclusive preview of paul smith's custom-made, one-off car model for MINI. ‘I went to munich and asked MINI in advance to completely strip out a car and collect the materials that are recycled and recyclable,' the fashion designer tells designboom about the start of the collaboration. we also spoke with mandy el-sayegh, angel otero, nacho carbonell and studio DRIFT about their works in 'second nature', an exhibition in aspen organized by carpenters workshop gallery and lehmann maupin. don't miss our conversation with HENN's martin henn on the post-pandemic workspace and designing the world’s first building made of carbon concrete, and discover more recent interviews here. last, 4760 pieces of trash collected by volunteers during beach clean-ups were used to create ‘perpetual plastic’, a monumental data sculpture in bali that visualizes the environmental impact of exponential plastic production. see more submissions by our readers here, and find out here how to upload your own project here. the weekly is an inside review curated by sofia lekka angelopoulou. |
