| Despite uncertainty, Minnesota farmers are hopeful they'll have a good year | | The Russian invasion of Ukraine has grain prices on a roller coaster, and fertilizer and fuel prices rising. That's creating financial uncertainty for farmers. Today is the deadline for farmers to sign up for federal crop protection programs. Despite the economic uncertainty, many Minnesota farmers are sticking with their planting plans in what’s expected to be a profitable year. "This is a second year now I've done the budgets in this time of year where the prices are above our costs, which hasn't happened the previous five years,” says David Bau with the University of Minnesota Extension Service in Worthington, who helps farmers in southwestern Minnesota develop their budgets. “So that's a positive we have right now even with the higher input costs, our grain prices are at such a high level we can cover those expenses." Minneapolis Mayor Jacob Frey is not required to employ a minimum number of police officers. That's according to a state appeals court ruling Monday that overturned a lower court's decision last year ordering the city to boost police staffing levels. Frey says that he'll hire more officers anyway.
Today is the deadline for lawmakers to avoid business tax hikes. And there's still no deal. Legislative leaders met with Gov. Tim Walz Monday but couldn’t reach a deal on refilling the state’s unemployment trust fund and repaying a debt to the federal government. State officials have repeatedly said the deadline is Tuesday to take action and avoid tax increases on businesses but Democrats continue to argue that employers have more time to submit payment.
