Immigrant Kids: We Were Cuffed, Beaten in Detention Center

Immigrant children as young as 14 say they were beaten while handcuffed, locked up in solitary confinement, and left naked in concrete cells at a juvenile detention center in Virginia. “Whenever they used to restrain me and put me in the chair, they would handcuff me,” said a Honduran immigrant who was sent to the Shenandoah Valley Juvenile Center when he was just 15. “Strapped me down all the way, from your feet all the way to your chest, you couldn’t really move... They have total control over you. They also put a bag over your head. It has little holes; you can see through it. But you feel suffocated with the bag on.” Many of the kids were reportedly sent to the facility after immigration authorities accused them of belonging to gangs. President Donald Trump has repeatedly cited gang activity as a reason for his hardline position on illegal immigration. A former child-development specialist who worked inside the facility said she saw kids there with bruises and broken bones they blamed on guards. The detention facility denied all allegations of physical abuse.

New York’s Revenge-Porn Bill Killed After Google Campaign

New York state’s revenge-porn bill—which would have made nonconsensual sharing of sexual images punishable by jail time—died early Thursday morning following a last-ditch campaign by Google. The state senate adjourned for the year and took no action on the proposal, which was introduced in 2013 and recently taken up again after a campaign by the New York Post. The bill would have made it possible to give those found guilty of the crime as much as a year in prison and would have helped victims force internet hosts into removing the images. Google staged a late effort against the bill, saying it was opposed to government oversight on how it regulates content. “It’s deeply disturbing that Google and tech lobbyists were quiet as a church mouse for the five years this bill has been percolating in Albany and then literally the morning it’s up for vote, they bulldoze in with coercive demands on our lawmakers to change the language,” said attorney Carrie Goldberg, who was leading lobbying efforts. The bill had already passed the state assembly but required senate approval.

Prosecutor: Michigan State Is Obstructing Nassar Abuse Probe

A special prosecutor has threatened to seek a search warrant against Michigan State University after accusing it of withholding “critical” documents that could determine how school officials handled allegations surrounding disgraced sports doctor Larry Nassar. The attorney general’s office said the college is “wrongfully withholding information,” but the school insisted it is cooperating, while also asserting attorney-client privilege in withholding some documents and redacting others. “Without knowing more specifics on what exactly MSU is accused of withholding, it’s hard for me to comment,” said Michigan State spokeswoman Emily Guerrant. “We have handed over more than 75,000 documents to the AG’s office, and have been thoroughly cooperating with their investigation.” However, investigator William Forsyth said he has not received the documents he needs to carry out his review, alleging that the university has provided “irrelevant” documents, including the school’s bedbug-control policy.

Sara Netanyahu Charged With Fraud in Meal Expenses Scandal

Sara Netanyahu, the wife of Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu, was indicted Thursday on charges of fraud that involves meal expenses at the prime minister's residence. According to a draft of the indictment, Netanyahu instructed staff at the residence in Jerusalem to order meals worth a total of 360,000 shekels ($99,000) from gourmet restaurants. Rules prohibit the residence from ordering meals from outside when there’s a cook on its staff. Investigators say Netanyahu ordered that the employment of a cook at the residence be kept secret, and that she was aware that ordering meals for the residence was a violation of the rules. When Leah Rabin was due to be indicted in 1977, then-prime minister Yitzhak Rabin resigned from office because of his wife’s scandal; the Jerusalem Post reports that Benjamin Netanyahu is not considering the same move.

Report: Trump Plans to Meet Putin in July

President Trump is planning to meet with Russian President Vladimir Putin during his trip to Europe next month, Bloomberg News reports, citing two sources familiar with the matter. The president is reportedly weighing whether to meet with Putin before the NATO summit in Brussels on July 11 or after his trip to Britain on July 13. While U.S.-Russia relations have remained tense in recent months after Trump ordered airstrikes against Syrian President Bashar al-Assad’s regime and the U.S. imposed new sanctions on several Putin allies, Trump recently extended a hand to the Russian leader at the G7 summit in Quebec. The president called for Moscow to be readmitted to the Group of Eight countries and largely shrugged off the reason it was kicked out in the first place—the annexation of Crimea in 2014.

New Zealand’s Prime Minister Gives Birth to Baby Girl

New Zealand Prime Minister Jacinda Ardern has given birth to a baby girl, making her only the second elected leader in modern history to give birth while in office. She announced the happy news in an Instagram post, writing Thursday morning: “Welcome to our village wee one. Feeling very lucky to have a healthy baby girl that arrived at 4.45pm weighing 3.31kg (7.3lb) Thank you so much for your best wishes and your kindness. We’re all doing really well thanks to the wonderful team at Auckland City Hospital.” The leader will now take six weeks of maternity leave, passing her duties to Deputy Prime Minister Winston Peters, but she will remain in charge by reading cabinet papers during her time away. Earlier this year, she played down the media interest in her pregnancy, saying: “I’m not the first woman to multitask. I’m not the first woman to work and have a baby; there are many women who have done this before.”

Doctors Without Borders Staff ‘Exchanged Drugs for Sex’

Aid workers at medical charity Doctors Without Borders used local prostitutes while working in Africa, according to whistleblowers, with one alleging that it was possible to barter medication in exchange for sex. A BBC report says the allegations are against logistical staff—not doctors or nurses—who worked at Doctors Without Borders (known as Médecins Sans Frontières outside of U.S.). “The girls were very young and rumored to be prostitutes,” said one whistleblower, adding that it was “implicit” that they were there for sex. “My colleague, who was staying in the same residence for a long time, felt that this was a regular occurrence,” she also said. Another whistleblower claimed she was told by a senior colleague how to exchange drugs for sex. “He said, ‘Oh, it’s so easy to barter medication with these easy girls in Liberia,’” the whistleblower told the BBC. “He was suggesting lots of the young girls who had lost their parents to the ebola crisis would do anything sexual in exchange for medication.” The charity said it does not tolerate “abuse, harassment, or exploitation.”

John Oliver Scrubbed From Chinese Twitter After Xi Segment

All mentions of HBO comedian John Oliver have been blocked from the Chinese version of Twitter after the Last Week Tonight host ran a scathing segment Sunday night about President Xi Jingping. In a 20-minute segment, Oliver ridiculed the Chinese president for “dystopian levels of surveillance and persecution” and online censorship, including the blocking of memes comparing Xi’s figure to Winnie the Pooh’s. “Clamping down on Winnie the Pooh comparisons doesn’t exactly project strength. It suggests a weird insecurity,” Oliver said. Any attempt to publish posts mentioning Oliver’s name or the name of his show on microblogging site Weibo will flash up an error message saying the post violates “relevant laws, regulations, or violates Weibo community rules.” The most recent comments about Oliver or the show were on June 14, before his segment on Xi aired Sunday. You can watch the segment below (except for viewers in China).

10. FINAL JOURNEY
Trump: North Korea Has Returned Remains of 200 U.S. War Dead

The remains of 200 American troops missing from the Korean War have been returned, according to Donald Trump. The president told a crowd of supporters during a rally in Duluth, Minnesota, that the remains were handed over Wednesday, just over a week after his historic summit with North Korean leader Kim Jong Un. “We got back our great fallen heroes, the remains sent back today, already 200 got sent back,” he said. There has been no official confirmation of the handover from military authorities. Nearly 8,000 U.S. military personnel remain unaccounted from the 1950-1953 Korean War and more than 36,500 U.S. troops died in the conflict. Unnamed U.S. officials told Reuters on Tuesday that North Korea would be handing over the remains to United Nations Command in South Korea, and they would then be transferred to Hickam Air Force Base in Hawaii.
