Concern over hackable video doorbells sold by mainstream sites

Popular video doorbells sold via online stores such as Amazon have serious security flaws, a Consumer Reports investigation has found

Popular video doorbells available via online marketplaces like Amazon, Walmart, and Sears and sold under brand names such as Eken and Tuck have serious security flaws, according to Consumer Reports (CR).

CR said it found that the China-made devices expose customers' home IP addresses and Wi-Fi network names to the internet without encryption, potentially opening their home network to cybercriminals. They also discovered a flaw with one of the doorbells that allows a perpetrator to gain access to the video feed simply by creating an account on the device's mobile app and entering the doorbell into pairing mode.

"There is more that [e-commerce platforms] could be doing to vet sellers and respond to complaints," said CR's Justin Brookman. "Instead, it seems like they're coasting on their reputation and saddling unknowing consumers with broken products"...

SMARTPHONE TECH

This company has big plans to change smartphone design forever

A new name in mobile has an ambitious plan to make modular phones work, from repairability to add-on modules

HMD Global is best known for making phones with the Nokia name on them, but that’s all set to change with a bold plan for the future.

Not only is the company making a Barbie phone with Mattel, but it’s improving repairability, too. And linked to that, it’s tackling one of the industry’s biggest missed opportunities — modular phones — by taking on the concept in a new way. HMD Fusion, the name given to its own take on the modular phone, will let you add so-called "Smart Outfits" that enhance its functionality. Think barcode scanners, directional microphones, extended batteries, complex medical devices, and so on.

And there’s a twist in that HMD has opened up the toolkit for the development of these Outfits to everyone, calling it a “blank canvas for creativity” ...

MARS HELICOPTER

The work of NASA's Mars helicopter is not done, it turns out

Ingenuity has been grounded since January after suffering damage to one of its rotors as it came in to land. But its work is not done

NASA has revealed that although Ingenuity's flying days are over, its onboard computer is still functioning and beaming data back to Earth.

Responding to a question during an AMA session on Reddit this week, a NASA official revealed that Ingenuity is snapping images with its onboard camera, though it's mostly of Martian sand as the camera is facing down. The official said Martian scientists can learn about geological processes on Mars "by having a series of images taken from one spot to see how dust, sand, and rock particles move in response to Martian weather and wind."

Ingenuity took more than 70 flights on Mars and became the first aircraft to achieve powered, controlled flight on another planet ...

Apple expected to unveil new laptops and iPads soon

Though it hasn’t announced timings yet, Apple is expected to unveil refreshed computers and iPads in the coming weeks

It’s almost March, the month when Apple is widely expected to release an upgrade to the MacBook Air and also its iPads.

A refreshed MacBook Air appears likely to grab most of the headlines. Right now, this is the only Apple laptop that doesn’t come with Apple’s M3 chip, after the MacBook Pro made the leap last year. The new MacBook Air will reportedly only get the entry-level M3, and while it’s not as notable an upgrade as the M3 Pro or M3 Max, its GPU improvements are still impressive.

New iPad Pro and iPad Air models are also on the cards, with reports suggesting the Pros will be the first in Apple’s tablet lineup to come with a brighter and more vivid OLED display ...
