A little while back I ran a poll on my Instagram about “vices”.
Here are the results from the people who responded…
- 12% of people struggle with weed - 16% of people struggle with alcohol - 34% of people consume too much caffeine - 38% of people say their biggest vice is… food!
One of the reasons I’m so good at discipline and overcoming bad habits is because I’ve had so many vices in life (all the above except weed).
Fun Fact: Both Coach Daniel and I once had addictions to chocolate-covered almonds…
And we’ve both spent a few nights in the past eating so many of them we felt sick.
The good news is that through those experiences we built systems that gave us better habits, higher performance, and other secrets that we can pass on to our readers and clients.
For example…
First, by sharing our addiction, we now have public accountability and so we don't give in anymore. Second, we also know not to keep chocolate-covered almonds (the vice) in our houses.
Third, both Daniel and I know that if you don’t have a replacement for the bad habit you’re trying to quit…
That stopping the bad habit will just leave a void…
And if you don’t fill it with a good habit…
You’ll just end up in the same cycle of bad behavior again.
Think about someone you know who tried to quit cigarettes…
The first time they failed they just went back to smoking… The next time they failed they started overeating…
And they probably just cycled through those bad behaviors
It wasn’t until they did better planning and preparation that they replaced the bad habits with good habits (like chewing gum, drinking water, going for walks, etc.).
Most people – unfortunately – never stick with their habit change long enough to figure this out.
And that’s why most people struggle in life.
Our challenge to you starting right now…
Is pick a bad habit to quit. Identify a good habit to fill the void. And make a public declaration for doing so.
Get a friend, family member, or coach to hold you accountable… And change your self-identity around this behavior.
That’s how you’ll finally kick your vices to the curb for good.
Now go give it a shot!
