Plus, Canada's call for smart grids

The energy, excitement and innovation were incredible this last week at Itron Inspire. Leaders in energy, water and city services explored the possibilities to address the challenges in our industry. Check out the Itron blog to get the highlights.

DOE commits to $1.3B transmission buildout

The U.S. Department of Energy (DOE) announced up to a $1.3 billion commitment in three transmission lines crossing six states, advancing projects aimed at adding 3.5 GW of additional grid capacity throughout the United States.

To ensure that transmission buildout is done in an informed manner, DOE also released the final National Transmission Needs Study to provide insight into where the grid—and American communities—would benefit from increased transmission.

The Needs Study released estimates that by 2035 the U.S. must more than double the existing regional transmission capacity and expand existing interregional transmission capacity by more than fivefold on its way to economy-wide decarbonization.

Canada's Government is calling for smart grid project proposals for demonstration projects and regulatory innovation capacity-building.
