ENERGY AWARENESS MONTH
 October brings Autumn to our door with football games, changing leaves and chilly nights. As the temperature starts to drop, it's the perfect time to think about becoming more energy efficient.
Since 1991 we have celebrated October as Energy Awareness Month. How can you conserve energy in fall and winter? - GET AN ENERGY AUDIT. You can take control of your energy spending as the weather turns cold by finding out where you are wasting energy. Let an expert help! Learn more.
- MAINTAIN YOUR HEATING SYSTEM. During the fall, electricity and gas bills increase with the continuous use of heating systems. Instead of turning up the thermostat, minimize your consumption by ensuring your system is properly maintained, including clean filters.
- FIND AND SEAL LEAKS. Be sure to check for air leaks or gaps around walls, ceilings, windows, doors, switches and outlets. You can reduce your heating bill up to 20 percent by preventing and sealing leaks.
- DECREASE THE WATER TEMPERATURE. Heating water accounts for about 18 percent of the energy consumed in your home. Turn down the temperature of your water heater to warm, or 120 degrees, to decrease excess energy usage.

FREE ASSISTANCE TO REDUCE ENERGY USE
 The Comfort Partners Program assists income-eligible homeowners and renters by installing energy efficient measures at no cost to help lower monthly energy bills. Benefits are determined on a home-specific basis and may include: - Installation of efficient lighting
- Programmable thermostat and smoke/CO detectors
- Hot water conservation measures (water heater insulation, pipe insulation and energy-saving showerheads/aerators)
- Insulation upgrades including duct sealing and repair
- Heating and cooling equipment maintenance
- Replacement of inefficient refrigerators and more!
On October 23, 2018 Acting Governor Sheila Oliver and BPU President Joseph L. Fiordaliso signed a Memorandum of Understanding between the BPU and DCA to combine the BPU Comfort Partners Program with the DCA Weatherization Program. This collaboration will assist low and moderate income residents to lower energy costs, fix health and safety issues, and ultimately improve the lives of New Jersey residents. APPLIANCE REYCLING NEWS
 New Jersey Board of Public Utilities' Commissioners (left to right) Upendra Chivukula, Dianne Solomon and Mary-Anna Holden visited the Recleim Refrigerator/Freezer Recycling facility this month to learn about the latest in clean technologies and business practices. According to the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency, increasing our recycling rate from 28% to 35% would reduce greenhouse gas emissions by 9.8 MMTCE. Roughly 8,000 fridges and freezers are recycled annually through New Jersey's Clean Energy Program. The program offers free pick up and removal, along with a $50 rebate per refrigerator or freezer, and an additional $25 for each room air conditioner or dehumidifier recycled during the same appointment.
