Good evening, It’s hardly surprising that there is more than a modicum of confusion surrounding the restrictions we continue to face as we try to rid the world of the Covid-19 pandemic. At a time when more towns and cities are finding their way onto the government’s ‘watch list’ and others, including Preston, have local restrictions, we now hear that plans are afoot to allow nightclubs to open. Most of us will completely understand the economic reasons for this. There is an entire sector here - along with other entertainment venues - which is at risk of disappearing. And after all, most of us will have seen large groups of young people gathering in pubs, parks and elsewhere. But nightclubs are, by definition, places where people go to meet up with people they don’t already know, often in tightly-packed surroundings. If we are more concerned about the economic fall-out which is heading our way than spreading the virus, then go ahead. But let’s not pretend that this is a great idea...unless we have decided herd immunity really is the only way forward. Gillian Parkinson Editor |
