Media Winners & Losers

MEDIA WINNER:
Steve Doocy, Franklin Graham

Evangelical leader Franklin Graham made a rare appearance on CNN Monday night in an effort to reach out to vaccine-hesitant viewers, particularly those who share his faith. Wolf Blitzer kicked off the segment by noting a Pew poll showing that 45% of White evangelicals said they will not get the Covid-19 vaccine.

“So,” began Blitzer, “what’s your message to fellow evangelicals who are still very hesitant to get this potentially life-saving vaccine?”

Graham noted that plenty of non-evangelicals are also skeptical of the vaccine, but then addressed his intended audience.

"We want to try to bring healing to people’s bodies, and we can do that through modern medicine," he said. "I thank God for the vaccine."

On Fox & Friends, Steve Doocy this morning unequivocally advocated for viewers to take the Covid-19 vaccine. It is the kind of direct endorsement and appeal critics have said Fox hosts aren't making.

“The vaccine is what’s going to keep a lot of people alive,” Doocy said. “So when you have the chance, get the shot.”

Polling consistently shows large percentages of conservative Republicans are "vaccine hesitant" or have decided they will "never" get vaccinated.

Both Doocy and Graham are speaking to audiences who trust them, but may be openly hostile to the message. That's worth praising.

MEDIA LOSER:
Chris Cuomo

CNN’s Chris Cuomo is having a time of it this year. His Cuomo Prime Time had another tough night in the ratings on Friday, coming in third in his timeslot compared to his cable news competitors, according to Nielsen data.

Cuomo notched just 808k total viewers and 190k in the valuable demographic of viewers age 25-54. FNC's Hannity was second in total viewers in the time slot, with 2.34 million, and first in the demo for the hour, with 330k.

MSNBC’s The Rachel Maddow Show was first in total viewers at 9 p.m. with 2.45 million, more than three times the total for Cuomo, and was second in the demo, with 310k.

Tucker Carlson Tonight was most-watched on cable news Friday, with 2.96 million total viewers, and 474,000 in the demo. The Five was second in both total viewers, with 2.54 million, and in demo, with 361,000. Maddow was third in total viewers at 2.45 million, and fifth in demo at 310k. Hannity was fourth in total at 2.34 million, and also fourth in demo, with 330k. The Ingraham Angle got fifth in total viewers, with 2.01 million, and third in demo at 331,000.

Fox held on to its winning streak in all dayparts, averaging 1.5 million total viewers. MSNBC was second in total viewers with 1.06 million, and CNN was third, averaging....

The A-Block

The Book

Scandal-plauged Governor Andrew Cuomo is reportedly receiving a total of $5.1 million for his book deal.

You may remember that October, the New York governor released a book called American Crisis: Leadership Lessons from the COVID-19 Pandemic. Cuomo was criticized going back to when the book was announced in August for writing a book about the pandemic amid the ongoing pandemic.

In the past few months, Cuomo has faced two scandals — one over nursing home covid deaths in the state, and one over multiple allegations of sexual harassment.

The publisher of Cuomo’s book said in March it stopped promotion of American Crisis, and just weeks ago the New York Times reported that the governor’s book deal “that ended with a high offer of more than $4 million.”

We now have a more definitive number: Cuomo is getting over $5 million.

The news didn't go over well. New York City Mayor Bill de Blasio took a hard shot at the governor over what he called "state-sponsored literature."

“This guy clearly depended upon public employees to do a lot of the work, and that’s not acceptable, he said. "You don’t need a lot of ethics training to figure out that’s not acceptable."

Fox's Janice Dean was considerably more harsh in her reaction.

“If you look at the timeline the governor covering up the nursing home issue, the tragedy of over 5,000 deaths that he and his administration tried to cover up for months, the timeline corresponds with him trying to sell that $5 million book," said Dean on Fox & Friends

Then she said Cuomo's book should be subject to the Son of Sam Law, which does not allow a person to profit from publicity of a crime they've committed and can make the profits available instead to their victims.

Ouch.

Must See Clip

The truth is out there?

If so, we don’t have it yet, but the questions are now being asked, as a detailed UFO report on CBS News’ 60 Minutes Sunday night attests. And people want to know.

“Imagine a technology that can do 6-to-700 g-forces, that can fly at 13,000 miles an hour, that can evade radar and that can fly through air and water and possibly space. And oh, by the way, has no obvious signs of propulsion, no wings, no control surfaces and yet still can defy the natural effects of Earth’s gravity,” former intel officer with Luis Elizondo, told CBS News' Bill Whitaker . “That’s precisely what we’re seeing.”

The clips, and the tweets about the clips, are well worth your time, in a story that is - incredibly - not being treated as the biggest story of the year.

No seriously. Go watch. 👽
