Media Winners & Losers

MEDIA WINNER:
Steve Doocy

Over the weekend, Dr. Deborah Birx noted that anyone who traveled outside of one’s normal bubble should behave as though they have the coronavirus.

This advice was mentioned on-air by Fox & Friends co-host Steve Doocy on Monday, who followed by noting how Birx also advised these people to get a test within a week if they were out and about and traveled this week.

But co-host Will Cain engaged the topic, explaining that he would be ignoring mask-wearing guidelines following holiday travel, and adding moreover that most Americans would likewise ignore guidance because of individuality or something. “I don’t know what we will call it, individual spirit, but I’m not going to be putting on a mask around my family," he said.

Trying to dress up conspiratorial thinking and pointless stubborn contrarianism as some sort of deeply American impulse of individuality is obviously offensive as well as presumptuous. And to his credit, Doocy didn't just let it slide. He immediately  interrupted, explaining to Cain what Birx was saying.

“Think about that you go out at grandma’s house and you come home, and Dr. Birx says if you have in your community people over 65, you have got to protect them,” he said. He added, “You would hate to have somebody my age give to somebody a little older or vice versa, whereas they are just saying just be safe.”

There is an ongoing and ridiculous effort from parts of the right to treat caring about one's community, family, and friends as if it is an act of self-enslavement. Cain irresponsibly pandered to or embraced that argumentative witlessness. Steve Doocy called him out on Fox &  Friends. Good for him.

MEDIA LOSER:
Maria Bartiromo

Mediaite's Joe DePaolo brings the case in this opinion piece out today

Do you believe in magic? Maria Bartiromo seems to. During her interview with President Donald Trump on Sunday, the Fox News and Fox Business anchor promoted a Federalist article titled “5 More Ways Joe Biden Magically Outperformed Election Norms.”

“These are some of the impossible statistics that we have found,” Bartiromo said — vouching for the piece’s veracity.

The anchor rattled off the items she — and the column’s author, J.B. Shurk — deemed to be unexplainable anomalies. None of the five points are even remotely indicative of any type of sorcery. One example, “Biden overcame Trump’s commanding primary vote,” would be comical if it weren’t so pathetic. The writer — and, by extension, Bartiromo — argued that because Trump received 94 percent of the vote in the Republican primary (a race in which he faced no opposition), his success should have carried over to the general election. This is more or less akin to suggesting the results of a preseason NFL contest should factor into the final score of the Super Bowl.

But no. Apparently Joe Biden’s victory cannot be explained with logic and reason. It must be witchcraft, says Bartiromo — an unserious person with a very serious platform.

Bartiromo, on Sunday, aided and abetted Donald Trump’s attempt to subvert democracy. It’s that simple.

For nearly a full hour, she allowed the president to spout lie after lie, conspiracy theory after conspiracy theory. Trump was permitted to filibuster for minutes on end, and spin a narrative which is both patently false, and totally removed from reality.

And when it came time to press him, Bartiromo pulled a disappearing act.

The A-Block

'Weird and Pointless'

White House Press Secretary Kayleigh McEnany faced mockery for her botched attempt to attack the communications team President-Elect Joe Biden has chosen for his incoming administration. She claimed that President Donald Trump has an "ALL FEMALE Senior White House Press Team."

But nope.

‘Fantastic Claims, Half-Truths’

Relatedly: Georgia Secretary of State Brad Raffensperger held a press conference Monday morning regarding the state’s recount, where he stated “fantastic claims” are misleading Trump supporters and even making their way to President Trump

Reopening the schools

New York City’s public elementary schools will begin a phased reopening plan on Monday, December 7th, Mayor Bill de Blasio announced on Sunday.

Familiar themes

Neera Tanden, the Center for American Progress president who was recently selected by Joe Biden to serve in his upcoming presidential administration, promoted past conspiracy theories about the integrity of election results in 2016.

Transphobic Attack

Orange Is the New Black star Laverne Cox spoke out after a transphobic attack in Los Angeles this weekend — expressing her shock before offering advice to her LGBTQ+ fans.

‘Psychosis’

The View started the week by ripping Trump for the conspiracy theories and groundless claims he pushed in his first post-Election Day TV interview with Fox's Maria Bartiromo.

Relatedly

Weird Evangelical conspiracy theorist Rick Wiles claimed Trump is trying to bring back the firing squad as a form of execution so he and his administration can shoot Democrat and media “traitors” before leaving office.

An Unexpected Covid Side Effect

One telltale side effect of a Covid-19 infection is a loss of taste and smell, and during this pandemic year, there has been a noticeable increase in the number of complaints on shopping sites by customers unhappy that they cannot smell their scented candles.

Kate Petrova, a research assistant in the psychology department at Bryn Mawr College, looked at the Amazon reviews for scented and unscented candles over the past few years, and posted several tweets with the data visualization.

Must See Clip

An Odyssey

The latest entry in the ongoing 2020 Files drama we’ve all become so familiar with is on the topic of a suddenly appearing and equally abruptly disappearing giant, 3-sided, rock embedded monolith in Utah.

The videos here, from the moment they first encountered it, to the first people to find that it was missing, are all pretty great. Not to mention the parallels in science fiction and the boundless metaphor.

It's the can't miss story of the (end of ) the month!
