Situational Analysis | Oct. 4, 2024 It's Friday and National Cinnamon Roll Day! There are 32 days until Election Day. Happy birthday to Rep. Norm Thurston! ð ð ð What you need to know 'Doubt the doubters,' said Utah Lt. Gov. Deidre Henderson in a speech on election integrity. A growing climate of distrust toward election officials threatens the safety of poll workers and the peaceful functioning of democracy, Henderson said. What was once considered to be a fringe group of "election vigilantes, who claim to value the Constitution and rule of law while violating both," Henderson said, is now cause for concern "that the volume and intensity of their destructive efforts are seeping into the center." "If mob rule becomes valued more than the rule of law, we risk losing everything," Henderson said. She called on Utahns to "commit today to accept the results of the election, no matter what they are;â and to âtake your vote into your own handsâ by updating your voter registration and signing up for notifications as your ballots proceeds through the tabulation process. Gardner Policy Institute shows that compared to national declines beginning in 2025, the stateâs college-age population is projected to begin decreasing in 2032 and decline for over a decade before rebounding. Several survey questions help us understand where Utah voters stand on taxation. They were first asked how they might allocate funds if the state received an additional $200 million to address issues such as education, roads, or homelessness. EduÂcation and tax cuts topped the list of preferred options, receiving nearly 47% of total responses. Roads, health care, and homelessness were at the botÂtom of votersâ lists of issues to address. When asked in 2020 which taxes should be cut, property and income taxes were votersâ top choicÂes In addition, half of Utahns disagreed that Utah should reduce taxÂes, even if it results in lower quality service or fewer services from the state. Liberals were more likely to disagree and those who noted taxation at the top of their priorities were more likely to agree. 66% of very liberal respondents strongly disagreed while 33% of very conservative respondents strongly agreed.
