December 2018

Wishing you a very merry festive season from all of us at Desert Pea Media.
Thank you for joining us on this incredible journey. We couldn't do it without you.

The Desert Pea Media logo, painted in locally sourced ochre by world renowned Tiwi artist, and good friend of DPM Pedro Wonaemirri in 2016 during a DPM project in Millikapiti, Tiwi Islands, QLD.

Desert Pea Media is very proud to announce a powerful new release The Real World from the Wiradjuri community of Forbes in Central West NSW. Co-written by, and starring, an incredibly talented group of Indigenous young people enrolled at Forbes High School, this uplifting hip hop/trap anthem covers a range of hard-hitting social issues which celebrates the resilience and strength of the Wiradjuri people. It is part of an ongoing DPM project series called ‘Break It Down – Conversations around Mental Health’ funded by Western NSW Primary Health Network.   Special thanks to Yoorana Gunya Family Healing Centre.  Also a huge thanks to Barry Merrit, Aunty Aileen Allen, Kirra Nean and Marley Carr and all the community members for making us feel welcome, sharing your stories and teaching us about your country and community.

The DPM crew completed a really special project in Wilcannia, NSW in November. Despite a big dust storm sweeping through town and huge winds, we managed to get the music video filmed and tried something a little bit different - shooting in the dark with a smoke machine and lighting and working around the weather to get some shots down at the river too. We all came away from the week feeling incredibly proud of the young people we worked with, and the energy, hard work and enthusiasm they brought, especially to the filming days. We would like to thank all of the students we worked with as well as the community members who were involved, especially Aunty Brenda for sharing her knowledge of local culture and language and the staff at Wilcannia Central School for their support throughout the project. Huge thanks to our partners the Environmental Protection Authority (EPA) and NSW Health for funding this amazing project.

DPM co-hosted Starting Ground with APRA AMCOS, Create NSW and Arts Out West in Bathurst in November - a two day skills development workshop for emerging Indigenous musicians from across NSW, including our DPM>Futures participants Kirra Nean, Marley Carr and Michael Graham. The workshop was lead by award-winning musicians and producers from the industry including solo artist Troy Jungaji Brady, producer/engineer Liam Judson and songwriter/performer Leah Flanagan, with participants coming together to receive one-on-one mentoring, as well as guidance and new techniques in songwriting, live performance and production skills, music industry management, getting gigs, getting played on the radio, touring and publicity.

Create your own song using one of DPM Music Producer Hazy's exclusive beats, Dreaming.
Produced by Hazy in Kamileroi Country in July 2018, this track is a boom bap, jazz track that samples old school flavour for your listening pleasure. This one is for the road - sleepy, chill and emotive for your holiday weekend.
