AI can beat university students — and fool markers — study suggests

It’s believed to be the largest and most robust blind study of its kind

Researchers in the U.K. fooled exam markers with secretly submitted AI-generated exam answers that were given better grades than work submitted by real students, the Guardian reported. The study was part of efforts to identify potential risks and opportunities of AI for research, teaching, learning, and assessment.

In the research, answers generated by ChatGPT, which were submitted for several undergraduate psychology modules, went undetected in 94% of cases and, on average, attained higher grades than real student submissions.

Associate Professor Peter Scarfe and Professor Etienne Roesch, who led the study at Reading's School of Psychology and Clinical Language Sciences, said their findings should provide a “wakeup call” for educators across the world ...

Apple’s secret plan to change iPhone batteries forever

It may not be that long before Apple starts making iPhones with new battery tech

Apple is exploring a new technology that will allow a future iPhone’s battery to be more easily removed, paving the way for simpler replacements and repairs, The Information reported, citing unnamed sources.

"The new technology — known as electrically induced adhesive debonding — involves encasing the battery in metal, rather than foil as it is currently,” The Information explained. “That would allow people to dislodge the battery from the chassis by administering a small jolt of electricity to the battery."

Apple is apparently considering the change because of ongoing complaints from repair professionals and DIY enthusiasts who find the current interior setup challenging to work with ...

Samsung’s next Galaxy Buds are basically AirPods clones

Leaked images suggest Samsung has taken inspiration from Apple's earbuds

Samsung’s next wireless earbuds look a lot like Apple's AirPods Gen 3 and AirPods Pro with USB-C, according to a leaked render claiming to show the as-yet-unreleased Samsung Galaxy Buds 3 and Galaxy Buds 3 Pro, Digital Trends reported. The only real difference appears to be the trapezoidal stems instead of Apple's iconic tubular ones.

Samsung has always gone with stemless designs for its wireless earbuds, so the new look will come as a surprise if this is what the company does indeed reveal during its next Unpacked event on July 10.

But if the new style offers notable improvements over Samsung’s previous wireless earbuds, there'll be few complaints ...

The Bear season 3 reviews suggests it's gone off the boil

We’ve avoided spoilers here, though the individual reviews may contain lots

All 10 episodes of season 3 of the hit show The Bear dropped on Wednesday, and critics are already having their say.

Set as it is in a Chicago restaurant, food sites like Eater have been keen to offer their take, commenting that it found the show “trying to do a bit too much all at once” while finding some of the scenes “muddled.”

Variety said The Bear “feels torn between two identities: a voice for the world of restaurants at large, and a specific story about a specific set of characters,” and called it “a step down” from the previous season. IndieWire was a little more positive, saying the show “still cooks, but on a low simmer” ...
