During this Holy Week

Dear John,

The worldwide scope of the coronavirus (COVID-19) has created unprecedented challenges for governments, businesses and each of us individually. No aspect of our lives remains untouched by the pandemic. By this point, we all know someone who has the virus and many of us know someone who has died. We have watched as courageous healthcare workers and first responders have ignored their own well-being to treat the sick. All of this can lead to discouragement, frustration, anxiety and fear.

I pray that you and your family are well, staying safe and healthy. For those who are suffering from the virus, I offer my prayers for your healing. And for those who have lost a loved one, I pray for the repose of their soul and for your healing and consolation.

We have heard from many of you, asking for our prayers as you manage the crisis with your family and job. You have shared testimonies of how EWTN has become a lifeline connecting you to the Church when you are not able to be present in your own parishes and churches.

As Christians we know that our hope is found in the Eternal Word, Jesus Christ. In times of desperation, we know that we can always turn to our Lord, for His comfort and consolation. Only through our trust in Him will we persevere though this crisis.

Mother Angelica launched EWTN in 1981 understanding that the world needed to know the Eternal Word. She trusted in God’s Providence to start the Network and to keep it going. Her absolute faith has kept us on the air for nearly 40 years. As we live in this time of the pandemic, it seems as if EWTN was especially built for these days. Who could have imagined a time when all of the churches around the United States, if not the whole world, would be closed during our holiest days of the year?

At EWTN, we continue to live the mission given to us by Mother Angelica. We continue to advance the Truth as defined by the magisterium of the Roman Catholic Church. We continue to provide the means by which the various organizations within the Church will have a nationwide vehicle of expression. In this time of crisis, EWTN continues the mission that we have lived every day for the past 40 years. And we will continue to do so beyond the days of this crisis.

During this Holy Week, the holiest days of our liturgical year, I invite you to spend time with EWTN. We will broadcast Masses and events from Our Lady of Angels Chapel in Irondale as well as Masses and events from around the world. We’ll cover every major celebration from the Vatican, The Basilica of the National Shrine of Immaculate Conception in Washington, DC, Christ Cathedral in the Diocese of Orange, CA and other cathedrals and churches around the globe. We will also live stream these events on social media and they will be available for on-demand streaming via our website and mobile apps.

It is my hope that you will use EWTN programming and content to deepen your faith during this difficult time. Let us be a resource that helps you turn your eyes to heaven to help you through this earthly problem and to find the comfort and healing of God’s mercy during these holy days.
