BoldBrush Recommends: Dustin KlassenGet Notified When Dustin Posts New Art BiographyBorn and raised in Phoenix, Arizona, Dustin J. Klassen didn't come from an artist family. Though he had talent, it was never encouraged as a main focus. After earning a general studies Associates he made the leap to studying art in college. That was short lived as he was forced to drop out due to the monetary burden even while working full time. He then entered a career in education. Although he has always loved teaching, coaching, and counseling there was always something missing and after a 13 year successful career working for multiple school districts, non profits, and two Universities, he took a partial scholarship to a workshop at Scottsdale Artists School just to get another taste of art. While in Ben Hammond's sculpture workshop the decision was made to give up his lifestyle and go back to school to finish his art degree. He earned his Bachelor's in Fine Art from Arizona State University a few years later. Disappointed in the lack of focus towards representational art and skill building in the painting program, Dustin also took time studying with both local and international artists to broaden his understanding of the representational art world. He studied with the likes of Matt Dickson, Robert Lemler, David Leffel, Max Ginsburg among many more at Scottsdale Artist's School(SAS). He then started working at SAS as an Operation Coordinator, setting up studios, sweeping floors and doing whatever needed to be done around the school to be able to be around working Artists and Teachers as much as possible. This education gave a broad understanding of what it took to build a successful painting regardless of its style. Dustin now produces paintings ranging from Trompe Loeil to full Abstract pieces, from classical to alla prima and has become an award winning Artist. He has taught classes and workshops from Los Angeles to Maryland, but now is focused on teaching at Scottsdale Artist's School while raising his three children with his wife Yola, still trying to sneak in as much painting time as possible!
