Dear fellow South Carolinians, Thank you for subscribing to my weekly e-newsletter, and please remember to follow me on Facebook, Twitter, Instagram and YouTube. Lead-Safe Housing for Kids Act Late last month, I joined a bipartisan group of senators in introducing the Lead-Safe Housing for Kids Act. This legislation would require the U.S. Department of Housing and Urban Development (HUD) to update its lead poisoning prevention measures to reflect modern science and ensure that families and children living in federally-assisted housing are protected from the devastating consequences of lead poisoning. With buildings dating back to the 1920s, South Carolina is home to some of the oldest standing public housing in the country. We owe it to children both in South Carolina and across the country to make certain that proper inspections are taking place in regards to lead paint. My mission is to ensure every child from every zip code in the country has the opportunity to succeed, and I am proud to help reintroduce this bipartisan legislation to help ensure low-income families have access to safe housing that can provide a stable environment for their children's dreams to grow. You can read more about the bill here. 75th Anniversary of D-Day Last Tuesday, I was proud to join the U.S. Holocaust Memorial Museum to host a 75th anniversary commemoration of D-Day at the United States Capitol. Various colleagues, including Senators Ben Cardin (D-MD), Martha McSally (R-AZ), Tom Udall (D-NM), Tim Kaine (D-VA), and Congressman Dan Crenshaw (R-TX), joined me. We also had the opportunity to hear from Mr. Steven Fenves, a Holocaust survivor liberated by U.S. forces. I was honored to help reflect on the Greatest Generation and the way they preserved freedom for the world. May we never forget the men and women who paid the ultimate sacrifice to liberate a continent from evil. You can see more pictures from the event here and video here. Around the State Yesterday morning I had the pleasure of speaking to over 1,000 young men at Palmetto Boys State 2019. As a proud participant in Boys State back in the day, it was very special to share my advice and words of wisdom as these future leaders embark on this special week. You can see pictures here. Sincerely, Tim |
